Abstract:
Examines the case of the "Alaska plan", a proposition made in 1939 by some government officials in Washington, DC to bring over German Jews who had applied to immigrate to the United States, along with German non-Jews, to settle in Alaska and help develop the territory. The plan failed due to local opposition - the Alaskan Chamber of Commerce objected to bringing in immigrants and Jews, and the appointed governor for Alaska, Earnest Gruening (who was of Jewish descent), was opposed to it.
