Abstract:
A review of historiographical works of the 2000s dealing with U.S. responses to the Holocaust that succeeded to shed light on a number of important historical controversies. These include U.S. policy concerning Nazi Germany in the 1930s, the search for havens for refugees, efforts of Jewish activists to influence U.S. policy, the failure to bomb Auschwitz in 1944, unheralded U.S. rescuers of Jews, and the roles of the dissident Bergson Group and the U.S. Jewish women's organizations. Many scholars came to the conclusion that anti-Jewish sentiments too often affected the government's decisions. Some additional topics merit further study, among them the responses of U.S. ethnic groups and major public organizations to Nazism and its anti-Jewish policies.
