Abstract:
Discusses the poetic works of Yehudah Leib Teller (1912-1972), an American Yiddish poet and journalist - especially a number of poems from his third and last book, "Lider fun der tsayt", published in 1940. The poems analyzed are "Jews of Brisk Speak" (on the pogrom in Brest-Litovsk on 13 May 1937), "Hitler's March into Vienna", "Jud Süss Oppenheimer during His First Visit to Professor Sigmund Freud" (in which Freud is identified as a representative of the legendary Wandering Jew), and "Sigmund Freud at the Age of Eighty-Two". States that Teller implicitly challenges Freud to explain the catastrophes of the Jewish people in the 20th century. Examines the interdependence between Teller's poetry and his articles published in the New York newspaper "Der Morgen Zhurnal" between 1937-39.
