Abstract: The self-proclaimed atheist Jean-Paul Sartre portrayed the human being as a Dieu manqué, a »wannabe God.« His understanding of God, however, was limited to the philosophical notion of a self-grounded being, an ens causa sui. Many Zoharic texts, by contrast, depict seemingly interminable intra-divine, as well as human, struggles for unification that converge with Sartrean portrayals. Such texts, particularly those concerned with the divine relation to death, may be viewed as portraying the divine itself as a Dieu manqué. The juxtaposition of these Zoharic texts about human and divine souls with the Sartrean depiction of »human reality« provides unexpected reciprocal illumination – even in the face of Scholem's strictures against "existentialism"

Abstract: In many churches nowadays, there has been a standardized approach to premarital counseling for couples involving social, pastoral, and psychological perspectives. In contrast, many rabbis and other Jewish officials still concentrate on legal aspects alone. The need for resolving important issues on the verge of wedlock is too often left to secular experts in law, psychology, or counseling. However, in recent years, this lack of formal training for marriage preparation has also been acknowledged by the Jewish clergy in order to incorporate it in the preparatory period before the bond is tied. This case study focuses on Jewish and Roman Catholic conceptions of marriage, past and present. We intend to do a comparative analysis of the prerequisites of religious marriage based on the assumption that both Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church have a distinct legal framework to assess marriage preparation.

Abstract: Deuteronomy 23:3, says: “No … Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord”. This verse is motivated by a discriminatory tendency embedded in the ontology of the Deuteronomist. Interestingly, Deuteronomy 23:3 was used by Ezra-Nehemiah to discriminate against the “Moabites” during the Second Temple. Such ontology is countered by the author of Ruth in the narrative of Ruth during the Second Temple. This demonstrates an ontological “war” within the Bible itself. The primary contestation lies in whether God is exclusive or inclusive. This development necessitates a hermeneutics of suspicion. In the course of history, the “theology” of Deuteronomy has been used to grossly violate the human dignity of many God-fearing African people and many other people of the South for colonial purposes. To exacerbate the situation, there were persistent attempts from some quarters to universalise such a discriminatory biblical perspective. This would feed into the centre–periphery arrangement, with the centre feeding the periphery with such hermeneutics. For this reason, African scholars are implored to be very vigilant against ardent pressures put on the biblical texts by ontological, epistemological, and contextual biases of interpretations. Accordingly, Andrew Mbuvi identifies African Biblical Hermeneutics perfectly when he says it seeks to undo “the very construct of the ‘centre-periphery’ binary by allowing the possibility of multiple centres”). Kenneth Ngwa, thus, rightly asserts that African Biblical Hermeneutics considers African epistemologies and conditions “to be invaluable and legitimate contexts and resources in biblical interpretation”), drinking from our own wells). In consequence, this paper intends to set a dialogue between Deuteronomy 23:3 and Ruth 4:18–22. This paper aims to examine the understanding of God behind these verses. This paper will then compare the two theologies with the African philosophical concept of God. Harnessing the African concept of Ubuntu, this paper will de-ideologise the two texts and thus will provide a recommendation concerning the two texts.

Abstract: The doctrinal continuum between ancestral merits and rewards and punishments is well established in Second Temple Judaism and is discernible in John 8–9. Following Philo of Alexandria’s questioning of these doctrinal correlates, the Johannine chapters are subjected to a theological-rhetorical analysis focused on the transitional passage (9:1–5). The passage is here seen not as an introduction to a new theme but as corollary to the preceding chapter(s), having a duo-directional significance, linking a two-part refutation of invariably related doctrines: ancestral merits and rewards and punishments. The rejection or refutation of the latter affirms the rejection or refutation of the former, and vice versa. The Johannine chapters in question have a thematic and dialectical connection; they constitute a substantial part of the broader, interrelated polemic of the Fourth Gospel.

Abstract: This article examines how Jews and Judaism are envisioned in the Catholic imagination, through a critical reading of contemporary Catholic discourse on Judaism. It identifies three problematic areas. The first concerns the tendency of Catholic discourse to project a specifically Christian vision of salvation history onto the Jewish people, which reflects Christian rather than Jewish self-understanding. Second, this article analyzes patterns in language and imagery in Vatican documents about Judaism, alert to troubling allusions implicit in the texts. The third area concerns a hermeneutical obstacle to deep interreligious understanding, one which may be ultimately insurmountable: namely, the challenges of understanding the religious other according to its own self-understanding. This article reaches an ambivalent conclusion, conceding that the goal of recognizing the self-understanding of another religious tradition may ultimately be impossible.

Abstract: "Nazis, Islamic Antisemitism, and the Middle East demonstrates the impact on the Arab world of Nazi ideology and propaganda in the 1930s and beyond. In 1937, with the brochure "Islam and Judaism", a new form of Jew hatred came into the world: Islamic antisemitism. The Nazis did everything they could to anchor this new message of hate through their Arabic-language radio propaganda. The book sheds light on this hitherto unknown chapter of Germany's past. It presents new archive findings that show how the image of Jews in Islam changed between 1937 and 1948 under the influence of this propaganda and other Nazi activities. This fresh look at Middle East history allows for a more precise assessment of the present: What exactly is "Islamic antisemitism"? How is it currently manifesting itself in Germany and France? What makes it particularly dangerous? Only when we understand how strongly modern Middle East history is shaped by the aftermath of National Socialism will we be able to correctly interpret the hatred of Jews in this region and its echo among Muslims in Europe and develop adequate countermeasures. This volume will be of interest to those researching antisemitism, Nazi foreign policy, and the political history of the Middle East"

Abstract: To date, scholars explored Bruce Nauman's oeuvre through various perspectives, concepts and premises, including linguistics, performance, power and knowledge, sound, the political and more. Amidst this vast and rich field, Nauman's pieces have been regarded by critics in terms of systematic skepticism, tragic skepticism, skepticism of the medium, and linguistic doubt. This book methodically analyzes the notion of performative skepticism and its relevance to various dimensions of Bruce Nauman's post-minimalist artistic practice. It is argued that Nauman performs the perpetual failure of perception, hence, demonstrating its doubtful validity to produce certain knowledge without allowing a resolution. This kind of skepticism, here called performative skepticism, exposes the impossibility of epistemological equipment to produce knowledge, and the impossibility of attaining certainty in bridging the gap between knowledge and the real

Abstract: "The Gaon of Vilna was the foremost intellectual leader of non-Hasidic Jewry in eighteenth century Europe; his legacy is claimed by religious Jews, both Zionist and not. In the mid-twentieth century, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Rivlin wrote several books advancing the myth that the Gaon was an early progenitor of Zionism. Following the 1967 War in Israel, messianic sentiments spread in some circles of the national-religious public in Israel, who embraced this myth and made it a central component of the historical narrative they advanced. For those who identified with the religious Zionist enterprise, the myth of the Gaon and his disciples as the first Zionists was seen as proof of the righteousness of their path. In this book, Israeli scholar Immanuel Etkes explores how what he calls the "Rivlinian myth" took hold, and demonstrates that it has no basis in historical reality. Etkes argues that proponents of the Rivlinian myth seek to blur the distinction between Zionism as a modern national movement or a religious one - a distinction that underlies many of the central conflicts of contemporary Israeli politics. As historian David Biale suggests in his brief foreword to this English translation, "what is at stake here is not only historical truth but also the very identity of Zionism as a nationalist movement.""--

Abstract: The rise of the Internet and social media has enabled Jewish teachings to travel far beyond the boundaries of established Jewish communities. New channels for Torah study online have connected rabbis in Israel to non-Jews around the world who are searching for rabbinic mentorship. Tens of thousands of individuals coming from Hebrew Roots Christianity, Seventh-Day Adventism, and Messianic Judaism have converged with Orthodox rabbinic authorities through online platforms, where they negotiate theological questions and their own place within a messianic Zionist vision. In turn, Orthodox rabbis from Israel’s religious right wing are engaging in a new form of Internet proselytizing, offering non-Jews who feel lost in the boundary zone between Christianity and Judaism a concrete solution: they are invited to become Bnei Noah, the Children of Noah, a new Judaic faith and a harbinger of messianic times.

Abstract: Heinrich Graetz (1817–1891), the famous historian and biblical exegete, penned his commentary to the Song of Songs in 1871 to counter rising antisemitism fueled by racialized fantasies of Jewish gender and sexuality. Graetz contested antisemitic tropes of Jewish masculinity and femininity by reconfiguring the Song of Songs, this most blatantly erotic book of scripture, as a testament to and celebration of Jewish chastity. Against the lascivious femme fatal, Graetz introduced the tender Sulamit, whose paradigmatic chastity renders romantic ardor into asexual, sisterly affection. In contrast to the effeminate Jew, Graetz introduced the Friend, a brawny adventurer whose masculine attempt at chastity only reveals his sexual potency. Graetz leverages the co-constitutive relationships among gender, class, and race to bestow on these figures not only the bourgeois virtues connoted by their chastity, but also associations of whiteness and middle-class belonging. Graetz’s exegetical construction of new models of Jewish femininity and masculinity was no mere theoretical exercise, but a response to matters of life and death as the rise of sexually transmitted diseases coalesced into a public health crisis. With the specter of syphilis in the background, Graetz’s commentary to the Song of Songs proffered German Jews—and German Christians—a Semitic path to redemption from the immorality crippling fin-de-siècle Germany.

Abstract: This essay examines examples of the Oral Torah as a concrete, material phenomenon in late ancient rabbinic sources. The oral nature of oral Torah, both as an ideology and as a description of rabbinic textual practices, can elide some of the more evocative discussions of the nature of oral Torah. Previous discussions, such as Wollenberg (2019), have shown that the nature of the written Torah was often understood as unstable, changing, and mutable. This essay explores the other side of that equation, exploring discussions of oral Text as concrete, enduring, and unchanging. Two main examples are studied: the first from a passage in the Palestinian Talmud, and the second in a passage from the Babylonian Talmud. The Palestinian Talmud draws a dense network of connections between Torah scrolls, oral teachings, rabbinic sages, and the imagery of death and memorialization. The Babylonian Talmud similarly extends the value of rabbinic oral teaching into the World to Come, showing that while the associations between teaching, death, and eternal life manifest differently, they are still present in different rabbinic contexts. Taken together, these inscriptions of a concrete and material Oral Torah are fully realized in the body of the rabbinic sage. Other scholars have also shown that rabbinic sages become an embodiment of Torah: this essay examines the nature of rabbinic Torah, as discussed in rabbinic literature, to understand how that embodiment comes about.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the analysis of the discourse in major Israeli ultra-Orthodox newspapers during the first year of COVID-19. Following Durkheim, we argue that the pandemic not only brought about a health emergency, but also a state of anomie. Analyzing both Hamodia and Yated Neeman—both major news outlets of the ultra-Orthodox community in Israel—we show how in a time of anomie when the sanctity of life (pikuach nefesh) conflicted with the sanctity of the community, the latter prevailed. Thus, this study unveils a different set of moral priorities than the one commonly referred to in Israeli bioethical discussions in the pre-COVID-19 era. We also found that the Durkheimian “totem” or “God” metaphors—a symbol of society itself—are highly relevant in analyzing how leaders of the Haredi community in Israel tried to keep their congregation together. This was expressed in the two heavily censored newspapers we analyzed: they placed communal living above the sanctity of individual life in a way that exposed how the cohesion of the group and the community itself were sanctified. At the same time, what was identified as the real virus was in fact secularism and not COVID-19.

Abstract: Water is a master metaphor in literature, appearing in many writings around the world. In some cases, water is stormy, vicious and destructive; in others, water is calm, steady and enriching; in yet other cases, water is reachable, manageable, and replenishable. In this essay, I will examine the different meanings of ‘a well of water’ by comparing Jacob’s well in the Gospel of St John and the Jing (‘The Well’, #48) hexagram in the I Ching or Book of Changes. In this comparison, my goal is to show that while ‘a well of water’ has a universal appeal as a symbol of finding ‘a living spring’ in one’s spirit, it has different connotations and implications in different cultural systems. In these two renditions of ‘a well of water’, we find authors providing different answers to the fundamental questions of human existence and the meaning of life-long learning.

Abstract: This article offers a social and political reading of the ancient rabbinic law of finders. What are the effects of the law of finders on the ideals of friendship and solidarity? Early rabbinic explicit interpretations of the biblical law point to returning lost property as an ethical obligation empowering friendship and reducing enmity in society. However, a major change in this approach begins to take place in the tannaitic texts where this simple obligation is replaced with questions arising from practical impediments to returning lost property. These texts also allow for certain cases in which the finder can become the new owner of the found object. The heart of the problem lies in the view that ownership dissolves when the loser is presumed to despair of retrieving his lost item. It is astonishing to discern later Talmudic developments of the concept of despair (ye’ush ‏יאוש‎) leading to conclusions clearly contrasting with the social ideal of friendship ascribed to the law of finders by early rabbinic exegesis. In extreme cases—and contrary to the view of Roman jurists—some rabbis preferred the interest of the finder over that of the loser even when the lost item could be restored. Such rulings, this article argues, produce enmity instead of friendship, and they are criticized from a point of view internal to the rabbinic tradition itself. This critique, taken from a sociopolitical perspective, must be available for readers of rabbinic law.

Abstract: This paper investigates the much-discussed Babylonian incantation bowls inspired by approaches from thing theory, such as the concept of affordance, and from cognitive studies, such as the distributed cognition hypothesis. For once, the material aspects of the bowl amulets and how people may have perceived them are the center of the analysis, not the texts or the images that are inscribed in them. Thus, I discuss the different and versatile affordances ("options for action") that the bowls offered people living in late antique Mesopotamia and what their physical presence may have meant in terms of the production of an emotional response (affect). The preparation process of an incantation bowl, including the choice of bowl, ink preparation, and the procuration of suitable texts, may be seen as a sign of affect and emotion on behalf of several household members. These practices are ultimately very comparable to physical caregiving, and production of a bowl amulet is thereby shown to be firmly grounded in late antique Babylonian household medicine.

Abstract: By early 2020, COVID-19 was spreading around the world. In many countries, efforts to stop the proliferation included quarantining sufferers and those around them, and in some cases even locking down entire civilian populations. A pandemic calls for personal responsibility with regard to obeying authorities’ instructions concerning social distancing, the wearing of masks, and self-isolation after exposure to a corona patient. The idea of shaming people who are violating the regulations is spreading, but there have been only a few attempts to find the proper balance between respecting human dignity and concern for public health. This article surveys the Jewish ethical principles that seek to balance concern for public health with the shame of the individual and suggests that sometimes there will be both ethical and religious justifications for shaming, at other times, it will be forbidden, and on occasion, it will be permissible within certain limits.

Abstract: This article focuses on Holocaust consciousness in the most populous nation of Africa. In Nigeria, the Igbo in the southeastern part of the country have been in the forefront of a normative Jewish movement that has come to encompass several other ethnic groups and has constructed dozens of synagogues in nine states as far north as the capital of Abuja in the center of the country. But consciousness of the Holocaust emerged among the Igbos even earlier, as a result of mass killings that they experienced in the run-up to and especially during the Biafran War in the late ’60s. Today, resurgence of Igbo nationalism is intensifying salience of and identification with the Shoah. In the process, Holocaust rhetoric, Zionism, and outward trappings of Judaism are instrumentalized by Biafran neo-secessionists who do not belong to the community of Nigerian Jewry per se. The latter are indirectly imperiled on account of state security reactions to the former.

Abstract: In this article, I explore negotiations of alternative Jewish identities as a response to the Holocaust in two alternative histories by the Jewish American writers Michael Chabon and Simone Zelitch. Both engage in very different ways with the destruction of a physical Yiddishland in central and eastern Europe and explore notions of Jewish guilt and the projection of Jewish identities into the future. In The Yiddish Policemen’s Union (2007), Chabon explores the imaginary persistence of Yiddish language and culture in a Yiddishland that, after a mitigated Holocaust, has been transferred to Alaska. The Yiddishland in Zelitch’s Judenstaat (2016) is divested of its Yiddishness. Jewish statehood after the Holocaust is conceived in her novel in retributive guilt and relies upon a potent imaginary of Jewish Germanness which, extends to culture, language, and territory in an illusory continuation of a mythical Ashkenaz and eventually ends in the dissolution of Jewish sovereignty.

Abstract: Between 1940 and 1944, thousands of persecuted Jews fled Europe via the Iberian Peninsula. For men, a defining feature of this escape was feeling hungry for several months in a Spanish detention camp, the “campo de concentración de Miranda de Ebro.” There, the men developed coping strategies for acquiring additional food, and tactics for coping psychologically with the hunger. These strategies created bonds and stable groups; conferred a sense of agency; and made the men feel useful, valued, and cared for. In parallel, Allied country diplomatic representatives, Red Cross organizations, and American relief agencies provided food parcels.

Abstract: The British colony of Hong Kong was one of the last ports that Jewish refugees transited through before their arrival in Shanghai. By using recently declassified materials this paper argues that Hong Kong played a more complicated role an ambiguous refuge: one that provided shelter, but whose colonial administration was responsible for the internment and expulsion of Jewish refugees. This paper broadens its inquiry by analyzing local and historiographical factors that contributed to Hong Kong being overlooked. Adopting a Global Holocaust framework and following refugees' paths of escape reveals Hong Kong as more than just a transit port.

Abstract: From 1945 to 1948, prominent Jewish relief organizations in the United States (Hadassah, the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal, and the United Jewish Appeal) launched worldwide Zionist media campaigns to support the rehabilitation and resettlement of Holocaust survivors. The campaign, which was based on short documentaries the organizations produced and newsletters they published, influenced attitudes towards the Holocaust and the survivors. This essay analyzes the representation of the Holocaust and Holocaust survivors in these films and newsletters. It discusses the narratives promoted by these organizations, the ways their media campaigns commemorated the Holocaust, and the identities they crafted for Holocaust survivors. It contributes to the ongoing debate as to whether American Jews marginalized the Holocaust until the 1960s. It shows that Jewish relief organizations produced films and published newsletters that dealt directly with the Holocaust and the survivors’ pleas in the three years immediately following World War II.

Abstract: In the Holocaust’s immediate aftermath (1945–1946), a small gallery in Lund, Sweden exhibited the paintings and drawings of Polish artist Jadwiga Simon-Pietkiewicz, which depicted her former fellow inmates in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. This exhibit and subsequent exhibitions elsewhere in Sweden marked rare instances of early postwar Holocaust art displayed in a country that had been relatively unaffected by the Holocaust. By analyzing the response of the Swedish public and press to the artwork in these exhibits, as well as Swedish and international responses to “atrocity photos” of the liberation, the author broadens our understanding of Holocaust art, early testimonies, and agency and resistance during and after the Holocaust.

Abstract: The chapter deals with three categories of material life: books, clothing and houses. All three took part in a long process of historical change. Paper books in the form of a codex generated a cultural and sociological revolution which enhanced literacy and created a reading society. Reading sharpened people’s ability to differentiate and observe, which resulted in a higher degree of sensitivity and self-awareness and generated a new code of dressing, according to which people ought to conceal the natural contour of their bodies as much as possible. Textiles became the major industry of these times with its tremendously variegated fabrics and colors. It was not only the human body which ought to be fully covered. The house too was mainly furnished by textiles: carpets, cushions and draperies with almost every piece of furniture, jars, stools, wall niches, mattresses and large trays, being “dressed” by some kind of textile. Textiles of all kinds replaced the wood furniture of antiquity and totally changed the concept of furnishing a house.

Abstract: This chapter argues that evolving food ritual and practices have played an important role in the development of Jewish culture, religion and identity from its biblical origins and rabbinic innovations to contemporary discussion about food ethics. Following a broadly chronological structure, the chapter discusses the ancient origins of Jewish dietary laws and examines how Jews throughout history have observed, adapted, challenged or critiqued them as authentic expressions of what being Jewish meant to them. The final section of the chapter discusses some economic aspects of kashrut, highlighting both the financial costs of a kosher diet and the economic implications, particularly in regard to the non-Jewish world. While Jewish dietary laws are often seen as a barrier between Jews and non-Jews, they have also offered economic opportunities across religious boundaries.

Abstract: The contrast between the Jewish ethical tradition and many other faith (and legal) traditions is worth focusing on. The Jewish tradition has a sexual ethic that is quite vibrant. It prohibits incest, adultery, rape – even marital rape, and recognizes that marriage has both a reproductive and a companionship justification. But yet, the Jewish tradition never fully embraced a deep and theological prohibition on polygamy and never fully endorsed any deep prohibition against non-marital sexuality. Of course, neither of these are still overtly present in the traditional Jewish community, but this chapter explores the parameters of models of sexuality in the Jewish tradition within the historical, religious, and theological models found in classical Talmudic Judaism.

Abstract: The use of Hebrew in liturgical and ritual contexts may be traced back to the earliest origins of the Jewish people. The various linguistic genres employed for aspects of worship in the prophetic period were expanded in the Second Temple period when there was competition from Aramaic and Greek and influences from the Hellenistic world. The liturgical language of the Talmudic rabbis differed from that of the Qumran texts and Biblical Hebrew and itself underwent changes in the Geonic era, especially in the light of the powerful emergence of the novel register represented by the piyyuṭim. There was considerable controversy in the Middle Ages about whether the language of prayer should follow the biblical precedent or that of the rabbis, and a host of innovative language entered by way of the mystical dimension. The concern of many Jewish Hebraists in the modern world was that Jews should use beautiful and pure language for their worship and omit anything irrational or indecorous. When composing their Jewish prayer books, the various modern religious movements responded in different ways to the linguistic challenge but their responses altered with the events of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel.

Abstract: Since the resettlement of the Sephardim in the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungary following their expulsions from Iberia and into the modern era, Judezmo or Ladino, the distinctive Jewish language of the group often known today as the ‘Ottoman Sephardim’ or more broadly, ‘Ottoman Jewry,’ has played a key role in its speakers’ practice of Jewish ritual and religious life. The chapter offers a panoramic overview of that role. Basing itself on primary rabbinical and periodical sources in Judezmo and Hebrew as well as the extensive research literature on the language and culture of Judezmo speakers, the chapter analyzes the centrality of Judezmo among the Ottoman Sephardim as a language of sacred-text translation (e.g., Biblical, Mishnaic and Hebrew liturgical texts), paraliturgical literary creativity (e.g., original songs, rhyming couplets, hymns and dirges enriching celebrations of the calendar and life cycle), and language of holiday and life cycle event greetings, blessings, proverbs and sayings. Passages from Judezmo literature, in the original language and in translation, exemplify how the group’s rabbis and journalists related to Jewish religious ritual and custom, and commented on the decline of the traditional religious lifestyle under the influence of Western European liberal humanism from the beginning of the modern era. The chapter ends with some observations on the current Judezmo language and culture revival and suggests that this development may inspire a resuscitation of long-abandoned traditional religious ritual practices including some in which Judezmo played a central vital role.

Abstract: Body image is studied in the context of culture and religion and it is explored in relationship to Jewish ritual and practice. Several similar studies have demonstrated this association for Jewish women, and also for other religions and cultures around the world. However, the scientific evidence pertaining to the possible mechanisms associated with such links is less clear. Still, when examining the possible effect of Jewish rituals and practices that help people to cope with body image concerns, faith and media exposure were found to have a potential mediating effect. With regard to modesty, although a highly relevant construct when studying both Jewish rituals and practices and body image, no evidence was found for such an association, though more research is clearly needed. These findings highlight the potential protective factor religion may play in the creation of body image satisfaction among Jewish women. Limitations of current research as well as implications and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract: This ethnographic chapter is about alternative (non-Orthodox) funeral rituals in Israel, from the post-secular and post-modern perspectives. I trace the major components of non-Orthodox funeral rites in Israel. I propose to view them as a novel type of post-secular, post-modern ritual, which combines components associated with the meta-categories of religion and secularism, rather than exchanging one set for another. The new alternative ritual in Israel entails hybridization of canonic religious prayers and appeals to God with components devoid of religious connotation and even conveying an unequivocally anti-religious message, such as a secular Kaddish, poems and songs of famous Israeli and world poets and singers. My second claim is that in the frame of alternative rituals, the canonic and static repertoire of the Jewish Orthodox funeral is replaced by the new, more flexible repertoire of literary creativity including pieces from modern Hebrew and world poetry. These transformations in funeral rituals reflect multiple changes occurring in Israeli society: the trends toward post-modernism, post-secularism, feminism and the changing status of women; and growing individualism reflecting the increased presence of Western individualist ideas in Israel. The mass immigration from the secular (former) Soviet Union, economic growth in the context of globalization, a neoliberal shift since the 2000s, an expansion of consumerism, and new demands for recognition by non-Orthodox groups, all enabled the emergence of dramatic changes in the area of alternative funerals.

Abstract: The chapter on individuals with disabilities and their families explores the hallmarks, realities, and possibilities of a Jewish inclusive ethos and practice. Included is an examination of its roots in biblical and rabbinic text and its form and function in contemporary Jewish life. Also addressed is the research on best practices of inclusive faith communities, barriers to full participation in Jewish life, and bright spots in Jewish inclusion. While woven throughout, this latter section includes an in-depth dive into particular innovations in Jewish ritual and practice for individuals with disabilities. The chapter concludes with recommendations for areas for future growth both in the “structure of inclusion” and the “spirit of belonging.”

Abstract: Gershom Scholem devised the ironic formulation that Kafka’s literature depicts the Kabbalah from a secular perspective. This declaration, when unraveled, offers an indispensable key to understanding Scholem’s views on Kafka. Scholem’s formulation stems from his dialectical perspective of Jewish history and his reliance on the notion of Zimzum therewith. For Scholem, Kafka’s literature manifests the tenor of the Kabbalah without the Kabbalah’s content. The kabbalistic tenor of his literature reflects Kafka’s actual world in which God’s commandments have dissipated but the faintest whisperings of God can still be sensed. This state of the world is that of the Zimzum at its nadir. Scholem describes Kafka as caught on the border between religion and nihilism; he cannot be religious because when the Zimzum is at its nadir all religious content has disappeared. Yet, Kafka is also not a nihilist because he holds on to the possibility of God’s return in a future epoch. In fact, ironically, it is Kafka’s depiction of God’s hiddenness which causes Scholem to write so adoringly of him despite his bordering on nihilism. That is because for Scholem, one who depicts God’s hiddenness, while seeming to embrace nihilism, is actually prophesizing, albeit unconsciously, Judaism’s glorious return.

Abstract: The Germans' awareness of the murder of the European Jews began with the liberation of the concentration camps by the Allies. From there, a complicated history leads, via the judicial confrontation with the crime and the establishment of the new discipline of Zeitgeschichte (contemporary history), to the TV event ‘Holocaust’ (1979), which marked a caesura not only for the German public, but also for historical scholarship. Of great importance was the mere fact that ‘Holocaust’ established a globally understandable term for what in German had until then only been referred to in the language of the perpetrators Endlösung (Final Solution) or Judenvernichtung (extermination of the Jews), or in a metaphorical manner (‘Auschwitz’). The intensified public and historiographical examination of the destruction of the European Jewry that followed ‘Holocaust’ also provoked political and cultural counterforces, and led to heated debates in the 1980s. The term Zivilisationsbruch (breach of civilization) introduced by Dan Diner in the wake of the Historikerstreit (historians’ dispute) marked the singularity of the Jewish genocide and influenced both the development of Holocaust historiography and the evolution of Holocaust memory. The article seeks to explore this impact by going back into the German and European history of research on and remembrance of the fate of the Jews in Europe during World War II – from its beginnings in the late 1940s up to the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust in 2000 and the years thereafter.
