Abstract:
It is the late 16th century in Mexico and a time of plague. The Holy Office is rooting out heresy and particularly Jews, for the Jews are believed to be responsible for the plague. Friar Gaspár de Carvajal, a monk raised in a monestary since the age of 10, observes his family practicing Jewish burial rites at his father's funeral. He reports his family to the Inquisition and they are arrested. One brother escapes to Spain, but the rest are imprisoned until they recant. The other brother, Luis, recants because he has a vision that he should call himself José Lubroso and that he will father the Messiah. Although the family is free, suspicion is upon them and Luis's actions threaten to bring the Holy Office wrath
