Abstract: Presents an extract of a letter written by Sir Henry Ward, British High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, describing the riot of Greeks against Jews in Ioannina in 1851, in which one Jew was killed. The Jews were accused of having sacrificed a lamb with many odious rites, spitting into the vessel containing holy water, and other misdemeanors. The author of the letter supposes that it was the French consulate which fomented the riot.

Keywords: Antisemitism ; Jews ; Blood accusation
Abstract: On a blood libel on the Greek island of Zakynthos, which came under Venetian control in 1482, and was repopulated by Greeks, Italians, and Jews. Class conflicts led to a series of riots beginning in 1628. By the beginning of the 18th century, the island was regarded as a corrupt and lawless society. When a little boy drowned on Palm Sunday and his body was found on Holy Saturday, 1712, a rumor arose that he had been ritually murdered by Jews. The ensuing mob violence was put down by the fortuitous arrival of two Venetian men-of-war carrying 500 soldiers.
