Kurzfassung:
In 1987, the 100th anniversary of Marc Chagall's birth, an anti-Chagall campaign was launched in the Belorussian mass media. It was initiated by the Belorussian communist party leadership and supported by some intellectuals, like the anti-Zionist author Vladimir Begun and the artist Mikhail Savitskii. The campaign began at a time when there was a rehabilitation of "formalist artist" in Russia. The main arguments used by opponents of Chagall's rehabilitation in the USSR and his commemoration in his native Belorussia were "anti-Zionist" or outrightly antisemitic. In 1988 a documentary film by Arkadii Ruderman on the slander campaign against Chagall in Belorussia was screened in Russia. Objects to distortions in Chagall's biography made by writers who took part in the anti-Chagall campaign.
