Abstract: The doctrinal continuum between ancestral merits and rewards and punishments is well established in Second Temple Judaism and is discernible in John 8–9. Following Philo of Alexandria’s questioning of these doctrinal correlates, the Johannine chapters are subjected to a theological-rhetorical analysis focused on the transitional passage (9:1–5). The passage is here seen not as an introduction to a new theme but as corollary to the preceding chapter(s), having a duo-directional significance, linking a two-part refutation of invariably related doctrines: ancestral merits and rewards and punishments. The rejection or refutation of the latter affirms the rejection or refutation of the former, and vice versa. The Johannine chapters in question have a thematic and dialectical connection; they constitute a substantial part of the broader, interrelated polemic of the Fourth Gospel.

Abstract: Interpreters unanimously read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a passive. Good evidence, however, exists to challenge and problematize this conclusion. Recent linguistic studies on the ancient Greek middle voice reveal that aorist and future -θη- forms express a semantically middle domain. When we reexamine the word ἐνευλογέομαι within this light, a better option emerges for seeing its -θη- forms as manifestations of speech actions within this middle domain. In their own unique ways, the LXX as well as Philo, Paul, and Acts further corroborate this alternative. As a result, we may read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a speech action middle: “to pronounce blessings.” The proposed reading promotes a better understanding of Abraham within Genesis LXX. Rather than a means to an end, Abraham remains at the center of God’s blessing as the earth’s families cry out: “God make me like Abraham!”

Abstract: In 1947 Harry Austryn Wolfson published his massive and revisionary Philo: Foundations of Religious Philosophy in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With the book, Wolfson aimed at proving that Philo was an innovative and highly influential philosopher—by no means an isolated Jew of no consequence to the history of philosophy. As becomes clear from numerous letters written to Wolfson on the occasion of the publication of the book and stored at the Harvard University Archives, for Jewish readers Wolfson’s proposed rehabilitation of Philo could provide a point of orientation. It served as a source of comfort and of pride in the post-war years. While the main thesis of Wolfson’s book, Philo as the precursor of medieval philosophy, was rejected by most scholars of Philo and ancient philosophy, the letters and notes discussed in this article show that much more was at stake than a purely academic discussion.

Abstract: In the second century CE, a learned pagan named Celsus wrote an extensive critique of Christianity. The critique achieved enough recognition that Origen wrote a response. This contribution explores how a pagan, a Jew, and a Christian who were all influenced by Platonism, interacted by exploring whether we can determine if Celsus knew the works of Philo via Origen’s Contra Celsum. It considers four lines of evidence: Celsus’s recognition of “the more reasonable” Jewish interpreters who rejected literal interpretations for allegorical readings, esp. Gen 2:21–22; the specific example of anthropomorphisms, especially Gen 2:2; the extent of the Jewish allegorical readings; and a shared understanding of the First Principle, especially the ineffability of God.

Abstract: Several recent studies on Justin’s Dialogue with Trypho the Jew have argued that the Dialogue should not be read as a witness to the state of theological debate between Jews and Christ-followers in the second century. Such arguments conclude that Justin does not engage with actual Jewish perspectives, but rather reconstructs a hypothetical Judaism from second-hand, polemical sources, or merely uses Trypho’s “Judaism” as a stand-in for what are actually (in Justin’s view) heterodox Christian interpretations. This article challenges this claim by returning to an older debate in Justin scholarship: the question of his relationship with Philo of Alexandria. By attending particularly to the role of the Logos in each author’s exegesis of Pentateuchal theophanic texts, the article argues that Justin’s interpretations in the Dialogue carefully avoid a kind of Logos theology that is well represented in the writings of Philo. This rhetorical distancing supports the conclusion that, in the Dialogue, Justin is in fact responding to exegetical traditions which he knows from the writings of Hellenized Judaism.

Abstract: The article studies and compares how Philo authorizes παρρησία in Quis rerum divinarum heres sit and Quod omnis probus liber sit. After critically evaluating the scholarly literature on παρρησία in Philo, I go beyond the limitations of this literature by situating Philo’s views on παρρησία within the context of the ancient conventions of παρρησία, as well as in the changing socio-historical context of Philo’s writings. I argue that Philo creatively adapts the conventions of παρρησία to authorize that the Jews can have παρρησία towards God, as well as towards human beings within the Roman Empire. Their παρρησία is not authorized by citizenship, nobility of birth, good family reputation, and wealth, but by their conscience of having said and done everything to the benefit of God and their virtuous behavior according to Mosaic law.

Abstract: Sean A. Adams explores Exodus motifs in the writings of Philo. Exodus is the second most referenced scriptural book (after Genesis) in the Philonic corpus, although this focus on Exodus is not evenly distributed across all of Philo’s works, and he engages with its text in a variety of ways. Adams offers a succint overview of this material, and then selects two major aspects of it for more detailed investigation. First, he considers several Exodus passages which are employed by Philo in multiple treatises and so can be assumed to have particular significance for him (e.g. Exod 3:14; 7:1). Second, he examines how specific Exodus passages are interpreted by Philo in his Allegorical Commentary. Adams draws out from this study some important conclusions about Philo’s general exegetical method, espcially his exploitation of the intertextuality between Exodus and Genesis and other scriptural writings.

Abstract: Josephus may have held a notion akin to what we today call ‘natural law.’ However, unlike some other Hellenistic Jewish authors (like Philo), Josephus uses the specific Greek phrase [the] “law(s) of nature” sparingly, only five times in total. A survey of νόμος and φύσις in Josephus and other ancient Greek literature and an examination of the five passages where Josephus uses the Greek phrase “law of nature”—1) BJ 3.370; 2) BJ 3.374; 3) BJ 4.382; 4) AJ 4.323; 5) AJ 17.95—shows that Josephus did not employ the phrase to refer to what we call ‘natural law.’ Rather, by the phrase “law(s) of nature” Josephus always refers to passage between the realms of the living and the dead, i.e. the ‘domain’ in which law(s) apply. This does not mean that Josephus did not recognize a broader category of what we call ‘laws of nature’—fixed, universal laws that seem to govern human reality—but only that he did not refer to all these as “law(s) of nature.” Josephus’ “law of nature” does apply to everyone, but only in the context of right, wrong, and inevitable aspects of death and dying.

Abstract: ‏Does the infinitive לזנות in Num 25:1 suggest that the foreign women were prostitutes? Analyzing four Roman-period Jewish sources—Biblical Antiquities 18:13–14; Philo, Moses 1.294–304 and Virtues 34–50; and Sifre Numbers 131—this article demonstrates that the public exposure of naked bodies in LAB reflects Roman norms relating to prostitutes. Philo even more explicitly depicts the women as brothel prostitutes, projecting the Roman repugnance towards upper-class men openly entering such establishments onto the Israelites and presenting them as immoral by dressing them in the elaborate costume typically worn by courtesans in Greek sources. Sifre Numbers 131 is a satirical variation on the theme, the Israelites being tricked into entering the prostitute’s cubicle due to their ignorance of the (male elite Roman) stereotyping of female vendor markets as prostitutes and old women as bawds.

Abstract: The near consensus opinion that the author of Hebrews was not directly influenced by Philo needs to be reevaluated. Even though there are no obvious cases of borrowing, the cumulative weight of the evidence indicates a more linear relationship than what may be accounted for by situating them both within Hellenistic Judaism. A number of parallels are sufficiently detailed to suggest direct dependence. These parallels are of a formal character, such as the metaphor of the dagger and the particular use of the terms ὑπόστασις, ἀρχηγός, τελειόω, ἄθλησις, τεχνίτης, and δημιουργός, as well of a material nature, concerning the development of key ideas, such as the eternal nature of the Son, his Melchizedekian high-priesthood, and the perception of the heavenly sanctuary.

Abstract: The article focuses on the Spirit’s dwelling in a person in Rom 8,9-11, comparing Paul with a contemporary Jewish author, Philo of Alexandria. Philo shares the ideas of Stoicism and Platonism on the spirit as a constitutive element of the soul and reason. He questions the Stoic immanentism and materialism and, on the basis of the negative Platonic vision of the body, claims that the Spirit cannot reside in a person forever, the exception to this rule being the great Moses (Gig. 19-55). In contrast to Philo, Paul argues that the Spirit may dwell permanently in a fragile human body and is accessible to all. It is a gift of the Risen One, not a reward for a righteous life, and it abides in a human body redeemed by the Son (Rom 8,3-4). The apostle construes the Spirit’s dwelling in a person in a manner similar to that of God’s residing in a temple (1 Cor 3,16; 6,19), first literally and then with the metaphorical connotations of ruling and belonging.

Abstract: This article uses Kalman P. Bland’s The Artless Jew as a way to think about the recent history of the study of Judaism. The discipline’s preoccupation with disembodied texts has led to a way to conceptualize and situate Jews and Judaism that leaves certain blind spots and lacunae within our dominant narratives. To illumine some of these, the article focuses on ritual and what we can learn about the study of ritual in Judaism – and the study of Judaism more generally – by connecting it not to the particularities of Jewishness, but to the ostensible universalism of larger fields of study, such as the academic study of religion.

Abstract: Jewish observance of a set of legal practices constituted the most obvious distinction between Jew and gentile in antiquity. Yet Jewish ritual practice did not only affect the ways in which Jews acted but also how they felt about their Jewishness and their connection to the wider culture. Law and emotion play mutually reinforcing roles in both shaping and reflecting a society’s values, an observation that invites the following questions: how did observance of Jewish dietary laws make Jews feel, and which emotional norms were involved in the production of law? The emotions of those who observed the kosher food laws were variously characterized as hate, a self-controlled repudiation of negative emotion, or disgust. Disputes about how to understand the emotions that animate the dietary laws were attempts to define the power relations between Jews and the surrounding world: did Jews enjoy the power to integrate into their Greco-Roman surroundings?

Abstract: The views of Philo of Alexandria on wealth have been a source of controversy between those who argue that Philo was at times critical of wealth and those who contend that these criticisms were not of wealth but of the dangers posed by wealth. This article evaluates Philo’s position first by examining the evidence for his own wealth and then by considering two sets of texts from the Exposition of the Law: one set that interprets the biblical prohibitions against interest on loans (Spec. 2.74-78; Virt. 82-87) and another that evaluates the use of wealth (Spec. 2.16-23). The former set of texts are evaluated against the realia of Jewish loan practices in Egypt, while the second set is evaluated against Philo’s own family situation. The conclusion is that Philo was not critical of wealth per se, but of the misuse of wealth and the neglect of the poor.

Abstract: Drawing from recent ancient historical, New Testament and Second-Sophistic scholarship, this article proposes that the enigmatic 2 Peter can be better understood with closer reference to anti-sophistic polemical writings. Increasing light has been shed on the sophists’ interest in wisdom, display and rhetoric in contexts such as Athens, Rome, Corinth and cities of Asia Minor in the first centuries CE. After introducing historical attempts to identify a worldview compatible with 2 Peter’s polemical response, this article (1) describes the nature of the Second Sophistic in the first century with reference to two contemporary anti-sophistic polemicists, Epictetus the Stoic and Philo the Jew, (2) highlights features of 2 Peter which resonate with contemporaneous anti-sophistic writings, beginning with 2 Pet. 1.16-21 and (3) observes the way in which the Ante-Nicene Fathers, when seeking to discredit later sophistic opposition, drew heavily from 2 Pet. 2–3. It may outrun the evidence to conclude that 2 Peter’s opponents were professional σοϕισταί per se. It can be affirmed, however, that 2 Peter bears significant resemblance with first- and second-century anti-sophistic polemic and may be best understood with reference to it.

Abstract: In this paper I present three major contributions that Thomas H. Tobin, SJ, offered toPhilonic scholarship. I explore Tobin’s method of interpretationof Philo’s interpretation ofthe divine Logos within the larger context of Hellenistic philosophy and hisreinterpretations of the double creation of man and the allegory of the soul within thehistory of traditions. My aim is to show how in his elucidations of complex passages inDeopificio mundiandLegum allegoriae, Philo’s interpretations of Gen 1:26–27, Gen 2:7, andGenesis 1–3, Tobin lucidly highlighted exegetical traditions that Philo drew on and utilizedin his own interpretations. Tobin was ableto develop patterns and levels of interpretationthat allowed him to find unity in Philo’s biblical exegesis and to identify Philo as a vitalrepresentative of Middle Platonism

Abstract: Many gods lived in the Roman Empire. All ancient peoples, including Jews and, eventually, Christians, knew this to be the case. Exploring the ways that members of these groups thought about and dealt with other gods while remaining loyal to their own god, this essay focuses particularly on the writings and activities of three late Second Temple Jews who highly identified as Jews: Philo of Alexandria, Herod the Great, and the apostle Paul. Their loyalty to Israel’s god notwithstanding, they also acknowledged the presence, the agency, and the power of foreign deities. Reliance on “monotheism” as a term of historical description inhibits our appreciation of the many different social relationships, human and divine, that all ancient Jews had to navigate. Worse, “monotheism” fundamentally misdescribes the religious sensibility of antiquity.

Abstract: When raising the question of the origin of evil, we first need to distinguish between two meanings of the term. Evil can refer to phenomena such as diseases, earthquakes, natural disasters, and the like, or it can refer to “moral evils” – that is, to humanity’s wrongdoings, improper conduct, or vices. Since the concept of an Evil Inclination, as defined by the editors of this volume, relates to moral agents and not to a bad state of affairs, it undoubtedly fits into the second category. This does not mean that Philo did not attempt to deal with natural evils. In two of his philosophical treatises –both entitled On Providence – he addresses this issue in connection with the question of theodicy.

Abstract: The present article sets out to answer the question of the extent to which Naḥman Krochmal’s reappraisal of Philo of Alexandria in the light of his Jewish faith reflects a deep spiritual crisis that was engulfing the Maskilic world: the encroaching expansion of modern Hasidism with its transformed understanding of traditional Judaism among Eastern European communities. To this end, a major component of Krochmal’s Jewish historical thought as expressed in his masterful unfinished work Guide of the Perplexed of the Modern Age can be revealed. The examination employs two methods in order to uncover the intent behind Krochmal’s fragmentary presentation of Philo: exploring his utilization of Dähne’s Geschichtliche Darstellung der jüdisch-alexandrinischen Religionsphilosophie to demonstrate the congruence of Philo’s thought with Tannaitic ethics and drawing on similar depictions of Philo found among his circles and pupils. The study claims that Krochmal’s revival of Philo as a key Jewish thinker is politically mobilized for an ideological assault on the Hasidim, with whom the Maskilim had ongoing conflicts. Reconstructing his portrayal of Philo as a paragon of Second Temple Judaism, the paper argues that Krochmal projects his own spiritual crisis from the Maskilic settings of nineteenth-century Galicia onto the Jewish reality of first-century Alexandria, thus reproducing a valiant image of Philo as the embodiment of the Maskilic consciousness that was grappling with the ancient, overly theoretical Hasideans of his days.

Abstract: A commonly recognized feature of the Apocalypse of Moses is its ethical-inferential orientation. However, the present article seeks to show that this does not just manifest itself in retrospective reflection, but is also exemplified narratologically in the attacks on Cain, Abel, and Seth. Far from being superfluous to the main narrative, these incidents provide us with a paradigm for understanding the Apocalypse’s anthropological-hamartiological framework in the post-paradisiacal world: The one who does what is good will send both devil and beast into flight, but the one who does not will be overcome by them. In order to substantiate this thesis, the article compares the Apocalypse to the works of Philo and the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs.

Abstract: This article analyzes Bible exegesis as a key to understand the increasingly Roman orientation of Paul. Philo of Alexandria, Paul’s slightly older contemporary, is introduced as a point of comparison, as his move from the earlier Allegorical Commentary to the Life of Abraham clearly documents an intellectual journey towards Roman discourses, which is characteristic also of Paul. The argument is presented in three steps: initially the image of Abraham in Galatians is compared to that in Romans and the new discourse of exemplarity in the latter is highlighted. In the second section Philo’s image of Abraham is analyzed in its dramatic change from systematic Bible commentary to exemplary ethics. The third section deals with the Roman context. The latter is illuminated by looking at some passages in Philo’s later treatise Every Good Man is Free, which addresses Roman audiences on their own turf by discussing Greek and Roman heroes. It is shown that these Pagan portraits are animated by the same discourse of exemplarity as Philo’s and Paul’s Roman portrait of Abraham in their later exegesis. As the Pagan anecdotes have parallels in Roman literature, they provide a context for Paul’s and Philo’s exegesis in a Roman key.

Abstract: This article treats Hellenistic Jewish literature that ridicules the alleged worship of the elements, the heavens, the heavenly bodies, or other “parts” of the cosmos, especially as developed in the writings of Philo of Alexandria and Ps-Solomon. It is argued that such claims constitute a distinctive sub-type of religious polemic that draws on and adapts from Platonic and Stoic traditions of cosmology. Such polemics are most clearly developed in Philo’s treatises and in chapter 13 of the Wisdom of Solomon, but they also appear in more abbreviated form in the fragments of Philo of Byblos and Aristobulus. I suggest that these traditions of invective may bear on the interpretation of Rom 1:19–23, but only in an indirect way.

Abstract: The presence of wisdom “with” God at or before creation is well attested in Jewish sapiential traditions. Given the widespread recognition that the logos of John’s prologue corresponds with sophia in such traditions, it has become natural to read John 1:1b as virtually all English translations do—that is, as “and the word was with God.” Through comparative analysis of the role of divine intermediary figures in Middle-Platonism and Philo of Alexandria, this article argues against the majority interpretation by providing new arguments and a new conceptual framework for the reading, “and the Word was Godward.”

Abstract: Reflections on empires among ancient writers can take different directions. Some focus on the succession of specific empires and speculate about the number of empires destined to rule the world, as does the author of the Book of Daniel, for example.1 Such writers are in various ways concerned with history and how it continues from the past, through the present, and into the future. In some cases, this leads them to speculate about the end of time.2 Other authors are interested in comparing the empires of the past to the one(s) of their own day. In the Roman period, for example, many orators praise the Romans for establishing an empire that has surpassed all others. Abstract: Philo’s interpretation of the tree of life is consistent with his idea of a successful life as a life in virtue and love of God. If a successful life is a virtuous and pious life, the biblical tree of life must, above all, be read as referring to virtue, goodness and piety. Philo was dissatisfied with a literal interpretation. He used older interpretations but also developed new ones over time. Overall, the motif of the tree of life is not central to his thought. Philo mainly uses the axiomatic identification of life and virtue in Greek philosophy.
