Abstract:
Reflects on the nature of antisemitism, at a time of its intensification over the last few years in the Arab world and in parts of Europe. Considers antisemitism to be an intellectual disease, a disease of the mind, rather than a form of racism. It is impervious to changes; historical shifts have not ended antisemitism. It is fundamentally irrational, based on imaginary threats from Jews. Since it is self-inflicted by individuals, groups, or nations, antisemitism can be overcome, but only with great difficulty. Examples of societies that self-destructed because of their antisemitism are medieval Spain, France after the Dreyfus affair, tsarist Russia, and Nazi Germany. An important recent example is the Arab world during the course of the last century. The antisemitic anti-Zionism of the Arab world has been responsible for its serious failures, including its failure to modernize and democratize. Europe today is also suffering from the disease, partly fueled by resident Muslims. This antisemitism is linked to anti-Americanism. Contends that the U.S. is the only physician with the power and skill to provide a cure for the disease of unreason which is now manifested in antisemitism and anti-Americanism.
