Abstract:
Discusses the massive presence of Conversos in Brazil during the early modern period. They were successful economically and socially, but lived in permanent insecurity. Several generations after their conversion, Christian society still viewed them as Jews, they were suspected of Judaizing, and they were registered in the "Book of the Guilty" which kept track of their Jewish ancestry. In the 17th century, Conversos were subject to property confiscations and accusations of treason. Between 1710-1735, Conversos were victims of a wave of Inquisitorial persecutions. These persecutions were directed less against Judaizers than against a largely Converso-dominated colonial middle class, which threatened Portuguese dominion in Brazil. Towards the end of the 18th century, the Conversos were accused of Freemasonry and subversion of the French Enlightenment.
