Abstract:
Argues that a major gap in the study of Marranism has its source in the neglect of this phenomenon in Brazil, where 25-30% of the free white population in some areas were Marranos. Attributes their persecution less to religion than to racism and stresses, primarily, economic motivations. Considers that not enough attention has been paid to Marranos who did not return to Judaism. Shifts from historical considerations to a more typological approach, citing the French philosopher Edgar Morin, who discussed Marranism as a complex psychological experience of double identity, noting descendants of Marranos such as St. Theresa of Avila, Montaigne, and Spinoza, as well as Marrano types like Marx and Freud. Discusses, also, the Marrano dilemma of Heinrich Heine.
