    Abstract: The current paper explores the main Hungarian literary representations of Buchenwald. While the discussion below presents the most relevant historical facts, relates to transnational trends and briefly covers the reception of select texts’ Hungarian translations, it focuses primarily on three major works of literary fiction in the Hungarian language that address experiences of Buchenwald to a significant extent and in a fictionalized way: Pál Királyhegyi’s Mindenki nem halt meg [Not Everyone Has Died], Imre Kertész’s Sorstalanság [Fateless] and László Kroó’s Bölcsőm, koporsóm Buchenwald [Buchenwald: My Cradle, My Coffin]. The paper argues that Királyhegyi’s 1947 work is a fascinating experiment in black comedy, Kroó’s 1981 novel reconsiders anti-fascist certainties and develops a more hesitant and sceptical approach to past heroism within the broad parameters of state socialism, whereas Kertész’s 1975 novel amounts to an innovative attempt to create authentic testimony opposed to any and all forms of memory instrumentalisation.

    Abstract: This article discusses five little-known texts by Czesław Miłosz that remained unpublished until 2020. Written between 1946 and 1968, they have been recovered from archival collections only recently and published in Miłosz's Z archiwum. Wybór publicystyki z lat 1945–2004 [From the archive: Selected journalistic writings, 1945–2004]. My discussion focuses on Miłosz's statements concerning the Holocaust, with particular emphasis on the Warsaw Ghetto uprising (April-May 1943). I argue that the testimonies left by Miłosz in the form of poems, essays, and journalism create a community of memory, while also revealing empathy and solidarity with the victims of genocidal violence. Miłosz emerges here not only as an eyewitness to the atrocities and a firm opponent of antisemitism, but also as a moral witness. Despite some controversies of a personal and political nature, a telling example of Miłosz's attitude towards the Jewish insurgents who died in Warsaw are his words in a 1979 letter to Jerzy Giedroyc: “I will not be able to cope with my life because an honest man should have gone to the Warsaw ghetto and died there.”

    Abstract: Many liberal Jewish Americans wrestle with their apparently competing value systems; without the personal experience of the Holocaust, many do not identify with the need for Israel as a refuge. This “new” Jewish American, according to Andrea Most, has adopted a liberal Protestant ethos and loosened communal bonds that tied them together with other Jews. Many young, liberal American Jews, with incomplete knowledge of the history or politics of Israel and an identity filtered through progressive American ideals, are becoming disenchanted with the Jewish state. This chapter examines contemporary plays performed on American stages and how they shape and reshape Jewish Americans’ relationships with Israel. The plays are explored through their substance and the dialogue that emerges through their performance. There is a particular focus on generational divides in attachment to Israel, such as between a father who witnessed the horrors of Dachau and a son who asserts that the Holocaust is marketed and exploited to garner support for Israel in If I Forget. It then examines how the “theater of the real” influences reality, in the case of My Name Is Rachel Corrie, and sparks significant media controversy. The controversy generated by Seven Jewish Children includes damning reviews and two complementary plays in dialogue, Seven Palestinian Children and The 8th Jewish Child. Three of the plays discussed in this chapter had canceled performances, which caused a backlash against censorship. Finally, this chapter examines how the guilt and shame of Israeli Jews are portrayed and how they deal with questions of obligation and moral perplexity.

    Abstract: This article discusses some of the ambivalences that arise in Western efforts to represent Eastern Europe in the context of Holocaust memory. Focusing on German-language literature, I examine how tropes of boundlessness, violence and contamination derived from the pre-WWI colonialist vision of 'the East' reassert themselves in various eras of representation, including recent works inspired by contemporary historiography. While the embrace of 'discoveries' about the history of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe signals an appetite among the German-speaking public to do away with historical ignorance, these discursive continuities suggest that the appetite for alterity is undiminished. The adoption of the term “Bloodlands” from Timothy Snyder's book of the same name is a case study in how fresh perspectives on Holocaust history can be decontextualized and co-opted, contributing to an imaginary landscape that is remarkably unchanged in the German context.

    Abstract: Within debates surrounding "Levi's Paradox"—the idea that through their survival, survivors are not necessarily the "complete witnesses" of the Holocaust—the Muselmann is frequently posited as able to reconcile this conundrum. Within testimonial literature, these emaciated prisoners were perceived as ghost-like entities who were neither alive nor dead but somehow between life and death. The observed absence left in witness narratives thereby appears to be testimony from inside the experience of these Muselmänner. What is ubiquitously overlooked in such analyses is that the Muselmann primarily functions as a metaphor—rendering the absent dead legible in language. Ignoring this risks instrumentalizing the Muselmann, which threatens to allow the metaphor to become shorthand for something more generic—obfuscating the reality that Muselmänner signify real Holocaust victims.However, all metaphors contain a potential for semantic flexibility. Cannot the Muselmann's ability to pollute rigid dichotomies therefore be approached productively and more ethically when refocalizing him as a ghostly entity in testimonial literature? By examining passages from Primo Levi's If This Is a Man and Charlotte Delbo's Auschwitz and After, this article asks: if the Muselmann is viewed as a ghostly or spectral metaphor—a haunting force within the Holocaust's literary corpus—how might this spectral witness be able to draw attention to erasure and historical blind spots? Constituting an ethical and an interpretive undertaking, this refocalization simultaneously allows one to speak with the Muselmann and enables these anonymous victims to manifest themselves anew as haunting forces through literary testimony.

The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea.     Abstract: "Salo Baron was born in 1895 under the Habsburg empire and became one of the greatest historians of Judaism. He testified at the Eichmann trial. Baron was invited to teach in New York in 1926. When he got here he discovered what he thought was the American exception: as a new society, the United States would have not experienced any persecutions of Jews. That would alone refute--in his own words--"a lachrymose version of history," the story that lays out the destiny of Judaism as an uninterrupted list of persecutions and massacres. At most, he thought, American Jews would meet with prejudice or social barriers, but never antisemitism theorized as a political ideology. And yet, in 1913, in Atlanta, there was the case of Leo Frank: the lynching of a Jew accused of the ritual murder of a young woman, even though the charges had been dropped. It was the first American instance of hate-driven antisemitism. Some years later, Roosevelt's New Deal radically transformed the destiny of American Jews. For the first time powerful figures such as Henry Morgenthau and Louis Brandeis came to the fore, and Jews experienced a newfound prominence. Antisemites in America declared that Jews, having taken over the government, would destroy America's identity. During the period from Roosevelt to Obama, antisemitism increased and was clearly seen recently in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville in 2017 and in the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh in 2018. Antisemitic violence continues to grow here. On January 6, 2021, the attempted coup against the Capitol saw an outpouring of violently antisemitic slogans. All of which begs the question: does this mean that the romantic view of American exceptionalism, sanctified by many historians of American Judaism, has been refuted once and for all? Is the idea of this place of exile, seen as a protective and exceptional "home," in fact an illusion? Should it also be considered as the return of a "lachrymose" history? This book seeks to explore the answers to these questions"

    Abstract: "Judaism is often described as the religion of the book par excellence - a religious movement built around the study of and commentary on the Hebrew Bible and steeped in a culture of bookishness that evolved from an unrelenting focus on a canonical text. Standard works of modern scholarship reinforce this view -- that the Jewish tradition has always embraced the Bible as a blueprint for the religious life. In this monograph, Rebecca Scharbach Wollenberg argues that this depiction of the tradition does not hold for much if its existence -- and more specifically, not for the first thousand years after the Bible was first canonized. Prior to the modern era, late antique and early medieval rabbinic authorities were deeply ambivalent about the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament, aka Torah). The Bible can be a really unsettling book because of its repeated depictions of impiety, taboo behavior of all sorts, and unapologetic expressions of doubt and skepticism. It's no accident, then, that Jews -- including their rabbis -- seldom opened a Bible during this long period. But how can you avoid Bible reading while being part of a community in which that same Bible is supposed to be a central pillar of communal identity? The rabbis met this challenge by instituting two workarounds. On the one hand, they incorporated ritualized readings of biblical passages into liturgical gatherings, so that the text was "read" (or chanted) in a rote, formulaic way -- a way that did not lend itself to deep musing about meaning. In such gatherings, the Torah scroll was treated as an entity that manifests sacred powers in its own right (hence the development of rituals governing the handling of the scrolls, including the practices of binding, unrolling, and rolling them). On the other hand, the rabbis constructed a vast edifice of interpretation of Scripture that came to be known in the tradition as the "Oral Torah", including rabbinic stories, commentary, and laws (and associated with terms such as midrash and Talmud). Both of these workarounds, argues Wollenberg, served to marginalize the written text of the Hebrew Bible as a source of cultural transmission and knowledge"

An interdisciplinary team of historians, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and literary theorists answers these questions for Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. They show that the Holocaust has become an enduring topic in public among Jews and non-Jews. However, Jews in Europe work self-confidently on their future on the "old continent," new alliances, and in cooperation with a broad network of civil forces. Non-Jewish interest in Jewish history and the present has significantly increased over decades, and networks combatting anti-Semitism have strengthened

    Abstract: "The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans, Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the plans for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners - but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution"--

    Abstract: Yishai Sarid’s novella Mifletzet HaZikaron (The Memory Monster 2020) depicts the experiences of a young Israeli historian who guides tour groups—mainly Israeli high school students—through the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camps in Poland. Adopting a grounded theory research approach, the present article provides a theoretical sketch of the identificatory stances of such memorial site guides and how these change over time. The report of the protagonist in Sarid’s text (in the English translation) is used as data source for developing this draft. First, the concept of personal (un)connectedness with (Holocaust) memorial work is worked out. Second, a trajectory model is proposed in which personal control over the world of action and control of events by overwhelming circumstances are placed in a dynamic relationship to each other. Because the theoretical sketch is undertaken as an individual case analysis, it requires differentiation and saturation through further cases and data sources.

    Abstract: The article illustrates the Hebrew theatre from its beginning till today. It gives a short history of the beginning of a theatre in Hebrew, and shows that Hebrew drama is, in large, a part of modern Hebrew literature, especially in its early days. The article presents the profile of the main theatres in Israel, and discusses the core issues that theatres in Israel deal with. Such topics are: Zionism, its history and ethos, the Holocaust, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and burning social issues in Israel like secular-religion relations. It appears that the mainstream theatre in Israel is rather conservative and commercial due to being dependent on the ticket-buying audience. Another reason for its conservatism is its tendency, already from its early pre-state days till today, to reflect its audiences’ way of life and thinking. More critical and experimental theatre can be found in fringe theatre in Israel.

    Abstract: This study of Lithuanian South African Yiddish poet David Fram foregrounds poems in which he wrestles with issues of belief, observance, abandonment, and doubt. It juxtaposes Fram’s nature poems with those that encompass the impact of the Holocaust from the viewpoint of a distant observer, written before, during, and after the Second World War. Close analysis of the poems’ lyrical forms highlights his deep emotional and spiritual connection to nature and gratitude towards the Creator, which may be considered pantheistic, in contrast with the challenges to his trust in the Jewish God and commitment to traditional observance during catastrophic times.

Fleming draws together a diverse community of scholars to honor the career of Daniel E. Fleming as a historian of the Bible and ancient Near East. Together, these scholars participate in a dynamic historical enterprise, each one positioning themself along a Middle Eastern spatial-temporal continuum stretching from the Old Babylonian to the Persian periods. Each contributor attempts to touch a sliver of ancient history, whether a particular person or community, a text or visual image or scribal process. They do so through a diversity of methods and disciplines, which together reflect the possibilities and promises for history writing.     Abstract: "Within the vast network of Nazi camps, Stutthof may be the least known beyond Poland. This book is the first scholarly publication in English to break the silence of Stutthof, where 120,000 people were interned and at least 65,000 perished. A Nazi Camp Near Danzig offers an overview of Stutthof's history. It also explores Danzig's significance in promoting the cult of German nationalism which led to Stutthof's establishment and which shaped its subsequent development in 1942 into a Concentration Camp, with the full resources of the Nazi Reich. The book shows how Danzig/Gdansk, generally identified as the city where the Second World War started, became under Albert Forster, Hitler's hand-picked Gauleiter, 'the vanguard of Germandom in the east' and with its disputed history, the poster city for the Third Reich. It reflects on the fact that Danzig was close enough to supply Stutthof with both prisoners - initially local Poles and Jews - as well as local men for its SS workforce. Throughout the study, Ruth Schwertfeger draws on the stories of Danziger and Nobel Prize winner, Günter Grass to consider the darker realities of German nationalism that even Grass's vibrant depictions and wit cannot mask. Schwertfeger demonstrates how German nationalism became more lethal for all prisoners, especially after the summer of 1944 when thousands of Jewish woman died in the Stutthof camp system or perished in the 'death marches' after January 1945. Schwertfeger uses archival and literary sources, as well as memoirs, to allow the voices of the victims to speak. Their testimonies are juxtaposed with the justifications of perpetrators. The book successfully argues that, in the end, Stutthof was no less lethal than other camps of the Third Reich, even if it was, and remains, less well-known.
