Abstract:
Bouena Sarfatty Garfinkle (1916-1997), a Holocaust survivor from Salonika, left behind unpublished memoirs. She describes, inter alia, the Nazi persecution of Jews in Salonika and the beginning of the deportations, the collaboration of some Jews with the Nazis, her participation in the partisan warfare in Greece, her rescue of other Jews (whom she managed to smuggle to Eretz Israel via Turkey), and Greek-Jewish relations during and immediately after the war. Her memoirs (the original Ladino version is no longer extant; only an English translation made after her emigration to Canada remains) present a unique account of the fate of Salonika's Jews during the war, and is one of the few representations of a Sephardi woman's experience during this period.
