Abstract:
Discusses Christian interpretation of Leviticus 16, which deals with two goats: the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat. Both Tertullian and Justin Martyr disputed the Jewish view that Jesus could not be the Messiah because he did not come triumphantly; they claimed that the second advent will be triumphant, arguing that the scapegoat refers to Jesus' first coming and the sacrificial goat to his second advent. Tertullian derived his theory from the early Christian "Epistle of Barnabas". He combined the idea of Jesus' second coming with other arguments for Christianity's supersession of Judaism. Tertullian's interpretation not only consists of arguments directed against Judaism, but also includes the antisemitic charge of Jewish responsibility for the death of Jesus.
