Abstract: Maimonides' Letter to Samuel Ibn Tibbon is preserved in one fragment in its Judeo-Arabic original version, only, but it also survives in sixteen Hebrew manuscripts and in an early printed edition. The analysis of the textual witnesses shows that four independent Hebrew translations of different sections of the Letter were produced. An additional version found in the editio princeps and related manuscripts is a combination of one of the earlier translations and one or more additional source(s), possibly a fifth Hebrew translation. Only this last version contains in the last section on the study of philosophical books a much debated reference to Ibn Rushd and to al-Farabi's Political Regime. In view of the hybrid character of the editio princeps it is necessary to study the Letter synoptically from all the witnesses. The analysis also shows that the so-called Letter probably consists of two separate pieces written at a distance of about ten days.

Abstract: Because most readers of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed read it in translations, the exact understanding of these translations is very important for the history of the interpretation of the Guide. The aim of this article is to show that Al- Harizi's translations of the Judeo-Arabic word taʾwil have an important philosophical implication. His translations change a few critical passages in the Guide and make the radical (naturalist) interpretation of the Guide by the readers of this translation very improbable. By contrast, the translation by Samuel Ibn Tibbon makes this interpretation completely plausible (as does the Judeo-Arabic original). In my opinion the changes by Al-Harizi are part of his more traditional conservative interpretation of the Guide.

Abstract: This article argues that Moses Maimonides's Guide of the Perplexed first became known to a Latin Christian audience in Toledo before 1220, and that the section of it translated as the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis in 1223–24 (Guide III.29–49) is the work of Samuel ibn Tibbon and Michael Scot. Moreover, the introduction to exegesis that prefaces the translation reflects the work of ibn Tibbon. The article considers the impact early contact with the Guide had, first in Toledo, and then in Paris and Provence. The Guide presented a God who worked through the principles of Aristotelian physics, and offered an incentive to translate and study those works of Aristotle and his interpreters that illuminated these questions. Texts translated in Toledo under the inspiration of the Guide became core texts for Paris scholastics. William of Auvergne, the first Parisian scholar to use the translation, would play a key role in the trial of the Talmud. And Cardinal Romanus, to whom the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis was dedicated, is implicated in the controversy of the Guide itself among Jews at Montpellier.

Abstract: Among biblical accounts that invite skepticism, the antediluvian genealogies of Genesis have long attracted attention, with Methuselah famously living close to a millennium and others nearly as long. This study explores an analysis of the issue and its cognates in Revealer of Secrets (Ẓafenat paʿneaḥ), a fourteenth-century Torah commentary by Eleazar Ashkenazi that has only recently reentered the light of history. Striking is Eleazar’s teaching that Moses composed the chrono-genealogies in Genesis based on sundry traditions that contained “imprecise narrative hyperboles.” Eleazar also suggests that the patriarchal narratives are a “noble ruse” designed to inculcate belief in the world’s creation. Eleazar's exploration of the topic provides an entrée into the fertile mind and spirited pen of this barely known late medieval rationalist as well as into an unstudied chapter in the history of Jewish reflection on a challenging biblical crux that evoked much reflection and a rich medley of larger religious themes.

Abstract: Abraham Abulafia was a unique Jewish mystic of the thirteenth century. He was well versed in the works of Moses Maimonides and other philosophers and also had a deep understanding of letter permutation mysticism developed from various commentaries of Sefer YeṢirah. These diverse influences led Abulafia to develop a world-view emphasizing the differences between philosophical, traditional and Kabbalistic discourses. However, he argued that, ultimately, they refer to similar dynamics. This article focuses on the central role of divine flow (shefa) and the holy spirit in Abulafia's thought. The concept of the holy spirit as overflow was widely used in medieval literature across various religious traditions, such as Judaism, Islam and Christianity, to understand the nature of divine agency, causality and inspiration. Abulafia utilized this broad understanding to argue that all forms of discourse, whether philosophical or religious, are limited forms of the divine overflow. The only actual reality is the unified flow that transcends all forms of discourse and metaphysical and mental structures. Therefore, according to Abulafia, the mystical path is to transcend all forms of discourse and one's mental faculties and reach the state of union with the absolute divine flux.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish readings of the Akedah, the Binding of Isaac, remain almost entirely oblivious to the antinomy between ethics and the revealed divine command that many modern interpretations find at the heart of the story. This study explores an exception, the teaching of the fourteenth-century rationalist, Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan Ha-Bavli. In his Revealer of Secrets, Eleazar seeks a remedy for what he takes to be the theological and moral scandals that arise when the Akedah is read according to its plain sense. While Eleazar’s treatment of the Akedah builds in many ways on that of Maimonides, it also adds novel layers regarding this most difficult of biblical accounts. For this reason, the study begins with a substantial review of Maimonides’ intentionally elusive treatment of the Akedah and its reception among some representative later medieval interlocutors. Turning to its main focus, the article supplies a case study in medieval Jewish rationalism at its limits, in both matter and manner.

Abstract: This paper analyzes two transformative conceptions of qedushah (holiness) in medieval Jewish thought, Moses Maimonides’s and Moses Nahmanides’s. Maimonides reduces qedushah to the Mosaic commandments which he reconceives as communal institutions to constrain bodily desires and promote intellectualist values and as training for perfected individuals to de-corporealize themselves in imitation of God. Nahmanides argues that Maimonides’s legal reduction of qedushah leads to the absurd conclusion that the perfectly scrupulous law-abiding scoundrel who exploits loopholes in the law is qadosh! He therefore reconceives qedushah as a complement to the Mosaic commandments intended to counter the problem of the scoundrel. Thus qedushah is re-born as a corrective to abuse of the Law. Nahmanides then proposes two ways to achieve this goal: i) by rabbinic enactment of more laws to fill in (loop) holes in the Law and ii) by cultivating a virtue-oriented, non-legal conception of holiness as a character-trait that leads agents to act properly and spontaneously without legislation. For Maimonides the ultimate state of qedushah is the dis-embodied state of the intellect, for Nahmanides it is a state in which the whole person, body and soul, clings to the deity.

Abstract: Portraits of Abraham often bear the distinctive stamp of their creators, a fact attested in spiritual biographies of the patriarch in medieval Jewish literature. An example is Abraham as portrayed in the pages of a Torah commentary by the fourteenth-century Maimonidean Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan ha-Bavli. In step with Maimonidean models, this Abraham ardently cultivates noesis as the principal religious activity. At the same time, he puts himself in grave danger in order to promote a revolutionary monotheistic teaching. While often taking his bearings from Maimonides, Eleazar can imbue Maimonidean ideas and interpretations with new resonances and turn them in novel directions. In his account of Abraham’s career as a monotheist missionary, Eleazar portrays Abraham in a manner without Maimonidean precedent when he imputes to the patriarch the use of mockery as a device to breach idolatrous ignorance. Eleazar emulates Abraham’s use of ridicule in his campaign on rationality’s behalf. Yet where Eleazar’s Abraham uses mockery against pagan irrationality, Eleazar deploys it to deride fruits of the midrashic hermeneutic and its foremost medieval spokesperson, Rashi. Put otherwise, Eleazar ridicules midrashim that threaten to turn the divine word into a propagator of the sort of unscientific myths Abraham so heroically opposed. In so doing, he positions himself in a line of enlighteners standing at the perennial crossroads between rational religion and popular faith.

Abstract: The Provençal philosopher, biblical commentator, and grammarian Joseph Ibn Kaspi interprets some of the internal contradictions in the biblical text by using a methodology based on Maimonides’s Guide of the Perplexed. By drawing on Maimonides’s seven categories of contradictions, he argues that the first, third, fourth, and seventh type of contradictions explain inconsistencies within the Bible. He recognizes the first contradiction in the subjective influence of different biblical authors; the third contradiction in the differing parables of the resurrection of the dead; the fourth contradiction in whether or not children are punished for the sins of their parents and also in the contradictory decrees by King Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther; and the seventh contradiction in the relationship between God’s determinism and human freedom. At the same time, this article illustrates that Ibn Kaspi considers the first, third, and fourth contradictions to be only apparent contradictions, asserting that they merely appear as such to the reader. It is only the seventh type that is a true contradiction since, in Ibn Kaspi’s estimation, this was created by the biblical author with intent, in which one notion is intentionally false and the other intentionally true—thus revealing a dialectic of both freedom and determinism embedded in the biblical text.

Abstract: Abraham Ibn Ezra and Moses Maimonides both utilized earlier sources when they interpreted the biblical creation narrative. Some of their exegetical solutions, including the idea that the "firmament" and the "waters above the firmament" referred to regions of the atmosphere, can be traced back to earlier Judeo-Arabic commentaries. The latter were based on early medieval miaphysite Syriac sources, particularly Jacob of Edessa's Hexaemeron, and the exegetical tradition can be traced back ultimately to John Philoponus' treatise on the creation of the world. Philoponus' work was never translated to Syriac or Arabic as far as we know, but Philoponian ideas were transmitted in miaphysite Syriac exegetical literature. Nevertheless, we do find Philoponian exegetical solutions in Maimonides' work which are absent in the presently known intermediary sources. It is possible that Maimonides "reinvented" these Philoponian ideas through a systematic and creative re-reading of the transmitted material. However, despite his reputation as a major initiator of the "meteorological" exegesis in Jewish tradition, Maimonides was less innovative than Ibn Ezra in applying meteorological theories to biblical exegesis.

Abstract: The parallelism between the cosmogonical and prophetological opinions in Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed has long been debated. In the present study I buttress the claims of the traditionalist approach and suggest that it is the most convincing solution of the cosmogony-prophetology puzzle. Among all the existing solutions, the traditionalist approach (C1P3, C2P1, C3P2), represented by Lawrence Kaplan, provides the best match-ups of the two sets of opinions, but still has some difficulties in both philosophy and doxography. I address these difficulties by adducing new proofs to support the C1P3 and C2P1 links, and rectifying Kaplan's underestimate of the difference between P2 and P3. Accordingly, there is good reason to believe that Maimonides' own position is the opinion of the Mosaic Law (C1P3), a moderate naturalistic stance tempered by occasionalism. I argue for the coherence of this position on the basis of Maimonides' theory of prophecy, and conclude with a pedagogical explanation of the Aristotelian position presented in Sefer ha-Madda'.

Abstract: This article uses Kalman P. Bland’s The Artless Jew as a way to think about the recent history of the study of Judaism. The discipline’s preoccupation with disembodied texts has led to a way to conceptualize and situate Jews and Judaism that leaves certain blind spots and lacunae within our dominant narratives. To illumine some of these, the article focuses on ritual and what we can learn about the study of ritual in Judaism – and the study of Judaism more generally – by connecting it not to the particularities of Jewishness, but to the ostensible universalism of larger fields of study, such as the academic study of religion.

Abstract: This article examines two letters written by Immanuel of Rome, the fourteenth-century poet and thinker from Italy. Using new manuscript evidence, as well as a new comparative lens, the essay challenges traditional ideas about Immanuel's timeline and intellectual affiliations. Considering a discovery of an older version, a reexamination of a freestanding letter believed to have been part of the Maimonidean debate between Zerahiah of Barcelona and Hillel of Verona shows that Immanuel was not involved in this dispute over the proper application of philosophy and science to biblical exegesis. Having no known addressee, Immanuel's invective letter addresses a scholar's reliance on foreign wisdom, but the most interesting part of the letter is the concluding invective couplet. While scholars had identified the freestanding letter as an indication of Immanuel's involvement in the Maimonidean controversy, this article contends that such involvement is far more evident in a rhetorical letter embedded in Mahberot Immanuel, Immanuel's poetic anthology. The embedded fictional letter, addressed to Joab, challenges a poet, teacher, and ersatz scholar, as Immanuel derides his inability to appreciate allegorical readings of the Bible and his lack of a philosophical education. Using allusions to his own allegorical readings of biblical verse, Immanuel lampoons Joab as an Ashkenazic Jew, in his traditionalist exegetical sensibilities as well as in his inability to compose mellifluous verse. Abstract: Deuteronomy 15:8 dictates “Rather, you must open your hand and lend him sufficient for his lack that he is lacking (dê maḥsoro asher yeḥsar lo). The second- and third-century CE rabbis interpret this command rather narrowly, and it appears marginal to late antique Jewish notions of almsgiving. Maimonides (1138–1204) is the first jurist to interpret this scriptural language in a way that casts it as the underlying principle of the Jewish law and practice of almsgiving. Maimonides’s interpretive innovation is almost entirely neglected by thirteenth-century Ashkenazic scholars. The thirteenth-century Spanish scholars Naḥmanides, Shlomo Ibn Adret, and the unknown author of Sefer ha-Ḥinnukh refer to Maimonides’s understanding of dê maḥsoro, but their mentions of it demonstrate its marginality to Jewish legal and ethical discourse of the period. By contrast, the Spanish jurist Jacob ben Asher (fourteenth century) makes dê maḥsoro central to his understanding of Jewish charity in his systematic law code Arbaʿah ṭurim, and Israel Ibn al-Naqāwa does the same in his contemporaneous work of religious edification Menorat ha-maʾor. The growing popularity of the Arbaʿah ṭurim in the fifteenth century and its blending of Ashkenazic and Sefardic legal cultures account for the heightened importance of dê maḥsoro in Ashkenazic legal writing beginning in the fifteenth century and continuing into the sixteenth century.

Abstract: There is a strong consensus that Maimonidean ethics were heavily influenced by Aristotle’s doctrine of the middle way. And yet, sharp differences have emerged over the role played by Aristotelianism in the views of the Cordoba-born talmudist and philosopher. This study argues that while Maimonides embraced the Aristotelian paradigm in his youth, he eventually came to abandon it entirely and moved to adopt a distinctly rabbinic approach to ethics. This evolution went largely unnoticed due to the failure of commentators to detect a diachrony in the development Maimonides’s ethical writings. The evolution in his thinking was necessitated by a rereading of the rabbinic sources and by the ineluctable logic of the imitatio dei imperative. Of great importance to the history of religious thought and to the fundamental tenets of Judaism, I note that Maimonides crafted, on this foundation, an ethical commandment that was novel and original, and which functioned, substantively, as a kind of meta-commandment.

Abstract: The adoption and adaptation of Maimonidean ideas by a staggering array of Jewish thinkers, especially those who opposed his philosophical and legal positions, testifies to Maimonides’s success in reframing Jewish thought. This essay focuses on an exchange between Daniel ben Saadia ha-Bavli (fl. early thirteenth century) and Abraham Maimonides (1186–1237), which occurred in the shadow of twelfth-century institutional opposition to Maimonides (1138–1204), a period in which Maimonides’s reputation began to take shape. Despite the staunch opposition of Daniel’s teacher, Samuel ben ʿElī Ibn al-Dastūr (d. 1194/1197), to Maimonides, as well as Daniel’s own disagreements with Maimonidean theology, Daniel assimilated many Maimonidean legal doctrines, integrating them into his jurisprudential thought. Their exchange shows that both Abraham and Daniel, to different degrees, evaluated Maimonides’s writings with a certain degree of distance, absent much of the rancor of earlier and later Maimonidean controversies. Daniel’s critical engagement with Maimonides underscores that even those educated in the heart of the opposition to the Great Eagle derived much from his writings. Much like those who rejected Maimonidean philosophy, later talmudists who spurned aspects of Maimonides’s halakhah benefited profoundly from his efforts at categorization, organization, and systematization.

Abstract: This essay examines the influence of Moses Maimonides’s (1138–1204) theory of law and the supererogatory ideal on the pietist vision championed by his son, Abraham (1186–1237). It focuses on the place of pietism within the framework of the overarching aims of the law and on Abraham’s construction of a pietist discipline modeled on his father’s legal thinking. It identifies several ways in which Abraham hewed closely to his father’s legal and ethical rubric even as he created an innovative system of pietism in the process. Abstract: One of the well-known conundrums of the Guide of the Perplexed, found in its last chapter, pertains to Maimonides's contradictory presentation of the hierarchy of human virtues and perfections. This article draws attention to a parallel between the paradox posed by the closing paragraphs of the Guide and the contradiction found in the concluding paragraphs of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, a parallel that has never been noted by students of Maimonides. The intention here is not to make a categorical statement about Maimonides's position on the core issues of the relationship between the intellect and the moral virtues. Rather, it is to shed new light on the unexpected structure of the last chapter, and thus also provide a significant addition to the important debate about Maimonides's position on these issues.

Abstract: In delineating the causes or reasons for a thing’s being, Aristotle notes, “what something is and what it is for are one …” (Aristotle 1984, 198a25–6). The nature and structure of a thing and its purpose coincide. The nature and structure of a table is what it is for. The nature and structure of the heart is no different than its purpose, to pump blood. And so it is, as I shall argue, with Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed (c. 1190). The structure of the work is intimately related to its purpose and ultimate goal. That there is an overall structure needs to be unpacked, and that the structure, overall and even within its discrete parts, serves a particular end also needs to be clarified. If this programmatic essay succeeds, it will provide a framework for reading the essays that follow. Each essay may be read as offering insight to the specific issue at hand, but also may be read as, in its own way, aiming at the ultimate purpose of the work as a whole.

Abstract: Maimonides makes extensive use of metaphysics in the Guide, but he does not discuss the discipline’s nature or many of the basic issues it addresses. Instead, the Guide’s readers would need to be familiar with the tradition of metaphysical inquiry that Maimonides draws on, which is that of the peripatetic philosophers. Aristotle’s Metaphysics stands at its head, and Maimonides received it mediated through Greek and Arabic commentaries. Among the major Arabic commentators, Al-Farabi is known as “the second teacher,” after Aristotle; the titles are accorded them by Avicenna, who credits Al-Farabi with enabling him to understand the Metaphysics.

Abstract: Maimonides’ definition of prophecy is a sophisticated hybrid engineered from the materials of Jewish theology and medieval Arabic philosophy. This essay opens with a brief exploration of the theology, epistemology and cognitive psychology shaping PM, which, together, informs Maimonides’ view that prophecy is a cognitive feat that will naturally be experienced by certain people as a dream or vision. The remainder of the essay seeks to determine the precise point in which Maimonides’ prophet formed the propositional attitude of central importance to epistemologists, namely belief. In so doing, it shall become apparent that in no way can the epistemology of prophecy be reduced to the epistemology of divine testimony, which demonstrates that prophecy, at least in Maimonides’ hands, is fallible and that the distinction between Mosaic and non-Mosaic prophecy is problematic.

Abstract: As is often the case with subjects in the labyrinthine work that is the Guide of the Perplexed, Maimonides’ discussions of the concepts of good and evil are scattered throughout and often interspersed among other topics. In this essay I will endeavor to untangle some of the questions surrounding his treatment of good and evil – or good and bad – specifically as they relate to ethical action. But even limiting oneself to the ethical realm leaves open multiple avenues. Maimonides has much to say concerning virtue ethics, for example, whether with regard to specific virtues, or more generally with his well-known discussion of the Aristotelian doctrine of the mean. Given that our focus here is the Guide, however, where discussion of these issues is more limited than in Mishneh Torah and Shemonah Perakim, and that detailed scholarly work is readily available in these other areas, we will here devote ourselves to a road less traveled but of great significance to the trajectory of the Guide itself.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish philosophers thinking about creation were influenced by Aristotle’s model of an eternally existing world, by Kalam arguments for a created universe, and of course by the Biblical account of creation found in Genesis. Aristotle’s theory of time reinforces a cosmology supportive of an eternally existing universe, thus obviating the need for a creator. Although Aristotle’s eternity thesis is often regarded as the target of medieval philosophers, both Dhanani and Langermann suggest that it was possibly Galen rather than Aristotle who posed an equal if not greater threat. In contrast to Aristotle, both Greek and Islamic atomists denied the continuity of time, and posited the existence of discrete time atoms, thus undermining the very assumption that things “persist” through time. Like Aristotle, Galen was famous for having denied creation and emphasizing a self-contained natural order that eschewed a creator; because Galen was careful to reject atomism, the Islamic Kalam theologians might have gravitated toward atomism as an effort to develop an alternative world-view to the Galenic. Given Galen’s staunch anti-atomist views, Langermann suggests that “it is not beyond the realm of the possible that Galen’s notion of minima, and not just his reports concerning his atomist opponents, had some influence upon the Mutakallimûn.”

Abstract: One of the most provocative chapters in Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed is part 3, chapter 13. In this chapter, Maimonides criticizes anthropocentrism and teleology. He argues, inter alia, that it is pointless to seek the telos of the universe; that the universe was not created for the sake of humans; and that all beings were intended for their own sakes, not for the sake of something else. These views were rejected by many later philosophers, like Thomas Aquinas, Levi Gersonides, Moses Narboni, Hasdai Crescas, Isaac Arama, Saul Morteira, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Narboni wrote: “I am very perplexed by the Master! … [His words] contradict all the sciences. For the goal of all the sciences is to know the final end … This is no less than the abolition of the nature of the intellect!” Crescas wrote: “[It cannot be] what appears from the literal sense of the Master’s words. Heaven forfend that it should be attributed to God what would be a grave defect in any intelligent being,” namely, acting with no purpose! Arguably “[the most] systematic effort to rebut Maimonides’ discussion [in Guide 3.13]” was that of Saul Levi Morteira, Spinoza’s teacher. Spinoza, however, was not convinced by him. Indeed, he was the first major philosopher to embrace wholeheartedly Maimonides’ criticisms of anthropocentrism and teleology. Maimonides’ discussion in Guide 3.13, formatively influenced Spinoza’s celebrated assault on final causality in his appendix to part 1 of Ethics.

Abstract: This approach to Divine Law that Maimonides diagnoses as rooted in sickness of the soul has its source in a deep religious impulse and sensibility. Such an outlook assumes that providing humanly useful reasons for the commandments empties them of their religious meaning. Divine Law, if it has its source in a God who transcends humanity, must be inscrutable. Even more so, the religious meaning of fulfilling God’s commandments ought to be manifested in the surrender of the human will to the divine will. Worship is constituted as obedience, and such an obedience in principle cannot be in the service of human aims. It is not only the case that humans are incapable of approaching God’s mind and understanding His commands, but rather, the ascription of reasons to God’s commandments runs against their very purpose. The only reason for obeying a commandment is that God commanded it, and any attempt to harness such commandments to foster human aims would taint and undermine their purity as religiously motivated acts. This view is considered by Maimonides as that of sick souls since it constitutes an arbitrary God who commands with no reason, and it posits a human worshiper engaged in meaningless obedience. Maimonides provides a radical and thoroughly anthropocentric alternative to the meaning and end of Divine Law. Divine Law has a reason, it aims at human flourishing and it guides humans to achieve their ultimate perfection.

Abstract: In the Guide of the Perplexed Maimonides offers innovative readings of biblical terms and narratives through which he reveals his philosophy. Since he does not compose a comprehensive commentary on the Bible, Maimonides includes biblical exegesis throughout his philosophic work by explaining philosophic issues within the biblical text, in an effort to resolve seeming contradictions between philosophy and a literal understanding of the Bible. In the Introduction to the Guide, Maimonides presents his dual objective: to explain obscure biblical terms and parables, or verses and passages that have an external (literal, conventional) and an internal (philosophic) meaning. Maimonides maintains that the Bible has an esoteric level of philosophic truth, accessible to the intellectually qualified, which he discusses in his Guide for the discernment of those capable of understanding. Influenced by Al-Farabi, Maimonides argues that religion defers to philosophy and the Bible presents educational myths in which images represent philosophical truths for the masses. According to Sara Klein-Braslavy, Maimonides views the Garden of Eden narrative as such a myth reflecting “philosophic anthropology rather than historical narrative.” In his discussion of the episode in the Garden of Eden, Maimonides explores the human condition before and after the transgression and fulfills both objectives of his philosophic work by explaining an equivocal term and the figurative meaning of the sin and sinners in the parable – an explanation that is critical for a correct philosophical understanding of the challenging narrative.

Abstract: Maimonides famously says some rather radical things about God – radical even by philosophical standards – both about what God is like “in Himself” and about God’s relationship with the created universe. Maimonides’ most detailed and sustained presentation of these radical ideas is in his discussion of divine attributes in chapters 50–70 of the Guide. Indeed, it seems evident that Maimonides’ point in that section is to make plain these radical ideas. To put matters rather simply and straightforwardly, the radical ideas are these: Strictly speaking, God shares nothing substantive in common with created beings, neither existence nor life nor power nor knowledge. Indeed, strictly speaking, God has no intrinsic nature at all, no attributes at all, and stands in no relations whatsoever to the created universe – save for negative attributes and attributes of action. Even speaking strictly, God does have negative attributes and does stand in whatever relations to the created universe are entailed by His having attributes of action.

Abstract: R. Samuel Ibn Tibbon translated the title of the book, Dalalat al-ḥa’irin, as Moreh Nebhukhim, Guide of the Perplexed, thus creating a connection between the title of the book and the verse in Exodus 14:3: 'they are perplexed in the land' (nebhukim hem ba-areṣ). We argue that when Maimonides assigned the Arabic title to his work, he too thought of this connection to the verse. According to this, Moreh Nebhukhim serves not only as a guide to those who are perplexed by the contradictions between the Torah and philosophy, but also as a defense against those religions that make claims about the confusion of the Jewish religion.

Abstract: One of the distinctive features of Maimonides’ approach to the problem of evil is that he treats the problem not only from a metaphysical viewpoint, but from a psychological one as well. He blends philosophical, biblical, talmudic, and midrashic insight with psychological acumen, just as he does in his writings and communications to beleaguered communities and individuals. In the area of theodicy, then, he tackles two sorts of issue: (1) How God could allow any evil; how, in particular, God could allow the righteous to suffer and the wicked to prosper and (2) How human beings should experience and cope with suffering and death, and behave in its presence. For example, they need to ask themselves whether their personal situations affect how they assess the amount of evil in the world, whether what they regard as evils are truly evils or instead just contrary to their interests, whether they are blaming God for evils they caused out of their own free will, and what they can do to better their condition. Maimonides sometimes commutes between the psychological and philosophical dimensions of the problem.

Abstract: Maimonides never wrote a commentary on the Hebrew Bible or on any part thereof. That literary choice is belied by the influential legacy of Maimonides’ biblical hermeneutics as developed in the Guide. For the Guide is a work that is declaredly about Scripture. This claim merits emphasis: The Guide is first and foremost an exegetical work. In the general introduction, Maimonides writes that the two primary purposes of the Guide are: first, to explain the meaning of certain terms that appear in the Bible; second, to explain the meaning of meshalim, or parables that appear in the Bible. However, in terms of form, the expected approach for an exegetical work, in light of Maimonides’ intellectual background, would have been to compose a commentary on all or part of the Bible. Jewish biblical commentary was a sophisticated art by Maimonides’ time, originating as far back as Saadia Gaon’s (882–942) commentary on the book of Job, which adapted the genre of formal commentary for Hebrew biblical texts. In such formal commentaries, which harken back to models of ancient Greek and medieval Arabic philosophical commentary, three features stand out. One, there is a clear division between text and commentary, between chunks of text (lemmata) and their interpretation, between author and commentator. Two, the commentator follows the order of the text as a structural principle for the commentary. Three, the commentary is the product of one interpreter and reflects an individual reading. Often the commentator adds a preface of some sort, whose structure and themes were guided by a number of conventions. Saadia’s commentary features all of these elements, including an extensive introduction. As far as Greek commentaries on the philosophical-scientific canon, it is a matter of some contention whether Maimonides was familiar with commentaries on Aristotle by Alexander of Aphrodisias. We do know that he was familiar with Galen’s commentary on Hippocrates’ aphorisms, in Arabic translation, since he himself authored a commentary on Galen’s commentary.

Abstract: Two different copies of the influental Jewish philosophical and theological Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed, one in Hebrew and a second in Latin, are recorded in Pico’s library. A third copy, probably also belonged to him, is now the ms. Kassel, Universitätsbibliothek - Landesbibliothek und Murhardsche Bibliothek der Stadt, 2° theol. 67. The manuscript now in Kassel shows that Pico was not only a reader of Maimonides’ Guide but also a translator. Numerous passages have in fact been revised by Pico in order to improve the latin translation evidently considered not particularly correct.

Abstract: An article published in 2016 by Doron Forte claimed that the universally cited version of the concluding bibliographical section of Maimonides' letter to the translator of the Guide of the Perplexed, Samuel Ibn Tibbon, is both late and corrupt (Jewish Studies Quarterly 23). This claim entails that Maimonides did not recommend Averroes' commentaries on Aristotle in the letter. The current paper argues against this claim. It comprises seven considerations: two philological (based on testimonia Forte chose to ignore), two terminological and three just common sense. I present these considerations as complementary, one supporting the other, that together make clear that the most-often cited version of the letter is very old, the most reliable and likely the most authentic version. In fact, current evidence now points to Ibn Tibbon as the translator of this version, which shows that Maimonides indeed recommended Averroes' commentaries in this letter.

Abstract: One of the thorniest problems for the writing of medieval Jewish social history is the paucity of source materials. Yet even where documentary materials such as the Cairo Geniza do remain, scholars often complement their study of documentary materials by making recourse to legal materials. The legal genre of responsa, full of rich detail about life, has been particularly useful for social historians. In this paper, I will revisit this historiographic practice and suggest that legal queries from the Jewish community in the medieval Islamic world present a biased and sometimes tendentious picture of quotidian detail, and they must be studied with care and attention to the Sitz im Leben of the query itself. Internal evidence from two responsa from the hand of Moses Maimonides concerning a single case, the responsa of the geonim, and detail from court practice in medieval Egypt all reveal the ways that queries and responsa are works of legal advocacy from rabbinic patrons on behalf of their litigant clients. Therefore, historians may not take for granted their historical accuracy of detail—even detail given seemingly en passant. By rereading Maimonides' different responsa, I also shed light on the relationship between Jewish commercial law and mercantile practice in medieval Egypt.

Abstract: Maimonides opened almost all of his books with the verse “in the name of the Lord, the God of the world” (Gen 21:33). This verse describes the nature of Abraham’s calling, which Maimonides interprets, both in the Mishneh Torah and in the Guide of the Perplexed, as an effort to persuade others to abandon their idolatrous perceptions and affirm the uniqueness of God. There is, however, a difference between the way Maimonides describes Abraham and his calling in the Mishneh Torah and their portrayal in the Guide of the Perplexed. In the former, Abraham is presented as a philosopher; in the latter, as a biblical prophet. In the Mishneh Torah, Maimonides’s description of Abraham revolves around a verse that describes the “God of the world”; in the Guide of the Perplexed, Maimonides adds verses in which Abraham mentions “heaven.” In this article, I shall examine these differences and suggest that they represent developments and shifts in Maimonides’s own philosophical position.

Abstract: This article discusses Maimonides’s rationale for the incest taboo and traces its reception in Christian and kabbalistic traditions in the thirteenth century. Tracing the reception of Maimonides’s view enables recognition of the resemblance between Maimonides and Aquinas, the ambivalent stance toward Maimonides’s explanation expressed by Nahmanides, and the incorporation of Maimonides’s reasoning in one of the most systematic and enigmatic works of kabbalistic rationalization of the commandments, the Castilian Kabbalist Joseph of Hamadan’s The Book of the Rationales of the Negative Commandments. R. Joseph’s acceptance of Maimonidean principles and his integration of them in the theurgic Kabbalah reveal a conflict in the heart of its system and teach us about an important aspect of the theory of sexuality in Kabbalah. The inquiry offered here examines the inter-relations between divergent medieval religious trends in constructing the role of sexuality. Instead of the common presentation of Kabbalah as diverging from the ascetic positions of Jewish philosophy and Christianity, this analysis will elucidate Kabbalah’s continuity with them.

Abstract: Zechariah Frankel's Darkhei HaMishnah (1859) has been treated in the literature as either a) an early critical-textual work on the Mishnah or b) a novel theological statement for the human origin of the Mishnah. By examining the relation of Darkhei HaMishnah to Maimonides − another pioneering mishnaic scholar − I depart from both of these frames. Beyond the bounds of critical-textual scholarship, Darkhei HaMishnah casts the rejection of Greek philosophy as the founding intellectual gesture of rabbinic Judaism; this ultimately leads Frankel to deny that Maimonides was genuinely invested in the reasons for the commandments, or even in philosophy more broadly. On the question of the Mishnah's origin, Maimonides himself radically circumscribed the revelation of Oral Torah, and, like Frankel, he was roundly criticized for it. More than the novelty of Frankel's claim, the particular religious anxieties of 19th-century Germany Jewry were the necessary conditions for the controversy around Darkhei HaMishnah.

Abstract: This article argues that central to understanding Paradise Regained is Milton's Hebraic monism. By amalgamating the philosophy of Maimonides on prophecy and active intellect with his own, Milton logically answers key questions which, for scholars of the poem, remain unsettled: why does the Son enter the wilderness in the first place? How does he survive here for 40 days, and how, precisely, is paradise regained? For Milton, the Son's obedience and intellectual progress effects the transmutation of his body and heightens the capacity of his active intellect. As an intellectually perfect being, the Son experiences what Maimonides terms “veridical dreams,” and this achievement is essential both to his survival and to his regaining paradise. Scholars hitherto have confined Milton's monism to Paradise Lost. This article shows that Maimonides offers new insights to the philosophy, and posits the significance of it for unlocking Paradise Regained.
