Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

Abstract: This article examines the broader context for Polish Jews' de-assimilation since the fall of communism, analyzes the complex process of individual discovery and communal recovery of Jewish identity, and discusses the multiple challenges de-assimilated Jews face in constructing a new Jewish identity. The study is based on fieldwork conducted between 2010 and 2019, and includes participant observation in Jewish organizations in Poland and during a Birthright trip to Israel with a group of young Polish Jews; interviews with Jewish communal leaders and Poles recovering a Jewish identity; and archival research documenting the institutional rebirth of Jewish life in Poland.

Abstract: Histories like Heinrich Graetz’s Geschichte der Juden (1854–1876) may have once been prominent and popular, but more recently this genre has fallen out of favor as scholars generally no longer try to write monumental histories of the Jews. This article traces the turn away from monumental histories and how it represents fundamental changes in how scholars understand Jewish history: Graetz and his contemporaries constructed Jewish history as a unified field, but today some question the notion of “a” Jewish history, instead looking to a multiplicity of histories and narratives. Nevertheless, a cohort of leading scholars and popular writers continue to produce synthetic histories of the Jews, and many still produce linear narratives of Jewish history for introductory Jewish history courses. Consequently, this article brings together historiography and pedagogy to comprehend the persistence and meaning of master narrative frameworks as scholars and the public continue to envision Jewish history.

Abstract: After the 1968 emigration, very few Jews remained in Poland, and even more miniscule was the number of “Jewish Jews.” Since then the number has grown somewhat, and much of it is due to the process of de-assimilation; i.e., some people with Jewish ancestors raised in completely Polonized families began to recover, reclaim, and readapt their Jewish background. An analysis of this phenomenon is offered with a series of putative reasons for its occurrence. The individuals constituting the “products” of de-assimilation are the majority of Polish Jews today and form much of the current leadership. While individuals everywhere can strengthen their ties to the Jewish people and can experience teshuvah or another kind of “Judaization,” the process of de-assimilation does not seem to be reducible to those moves. It begins with no Jewish identity, and is highly dependent on the attitudes and cultural trends in the majority society. It does not remove the de-assimilationists from the majority culture. The phenomenon is general and deserves to be studied as a sociological mechanism working in other cases of assimilation to a majority culture. In the Jewish case, it is especially dramatic. Probably the first example can be found in the evolution of the Marrano communities settled in Holland. The presence of de-assimilation seems to differentiate some European, first of all East European, communities from the globally dominant American and Israeli ones. Probably this rather new concept is needed to describe a significant part of the world of the Jews of twenty-first century Europe.

Abstract: This article critically examines Krajewski’s (in this issue of Contemp Jewry) argument about the assimilation and subsequent de-assimilation of the Jewish population in Poland. While Krajewski asserts that Polish Jews underwent a process of assimilation followed by a revival of their cultural and religious practices, the authors argue that the term “de-assimilation” is not applicable in this context. They propose that post-war Polish Jews consciously chose to embrace a secular identity rather than a religious one, keeping their Jewish life private. This secular identity, characterized by interests in secular Jewish culture, learning, and social justice, as well as maintaining specific distinctive habits, remained dominant even after 1989. The authors also compare this process to the experiences of Spanish and Portuguese conversos, who returned to Judaism but retained syncretic identities. They emphasize the importance of understanding the complex nature of Jewish identity and involvement, highlighting the significance of secular and cultural practices among Polish Jews.

Abstract: This article surveys the development of the public artificial wading pools that have been established in Judea and Samaria since 2007 and examines physical, social, and symbolic aspects that this contemplation brings to light. The pools were built through local initiatives in response to the lack of natural springs in the environs of the settlements in which they are located. They also serve to address the complex geopolitical and security reality that excludes Jewish inhabitants from natural water sources located near areas inhabited by the Palestinian population. Since their establishment, the pools have served as a magnet for many local visitors, hikers, and tourists. Observing those visiting the pools reveals a prominent presence of women and children enjoying the sense of security around them; examining their usage is reflective of a creative and practical solution to the issue of the multi-gender bathing of the national-religious population; and contemplating the actions of the local authorities indicates that these pools serve them as a preferred means of disseminating public information and diplomacy. In addition, their symbolic meanings sharpen the insight that their design was meant to imbue them with a “biblical,” pastoral appearance, as part of the spatial conception of second generation Jewish settlers in Judea and Samaria. These trends preserve the landscape memory that was ingrained in members of the first generation in a new form and hold explicit and implicit political and ideological meanings.

Abstract: Even before normalization—in December 2020, under the auspices of the United States—Israel and Morocco had had “normal” relations for 2,500 years. Morocco has always been a homeland for the Jews, but also a sacred place where many of their saints are buried. Muslims and Jews have lived in Morocco for centuries in peace, mutual respect, and care. This mutual understanding of the past, with its rich cultural heritage, translates today into a friendship without equal. Morocco and Israel are moving into the future hand in hand to write new chapters of understanding, harmony, and human development.

Abstract: The Jewish settlement in Cordoba predates the Islamic conquest of the Iberian peninsula. The integration of the Jewish community into the government is seen in the appearance of the figure of the Jewish courtier; and their integration into the cultural environment of al-Andalus can be initially seen in the progress made in the field of philology, poetry and legal texts, where the Andalusi intellectuals were pioneers. The havoc of the war and the economic collapse of the capital of the caliphate had repercussions for the Jewish community when the population was distributed by regions. The Jewish community of Cordoba would never recover its former prestige, although many important figures born in the city.

Abstract: This chapter deals with Shanghai – once East Asia’s biggest Jewish community. It emphasizes the diversity of the Jewish community, which emerged with the arrival of Baghdadi Jews in the mid-nineteenth century, was invigorated by the arrival of Russian Jews in the early twentieth century and then more than tripled with the influx of refugees from Central and Eastern Europe on the eve of the Pacific War. The chapter tracks the origins of the Jewish settlement in the city, examines the reasons for its rise and decline and explores the emergence of a new community of Jewish professionals and ex-pats during the last three decades.

Abstract: Around 1920 Chicago had emerged as one of the largest centers of Jewish life in the world. However, this is a little-known fact. Jews do not feature prominently in Chicago’s history and memory, even though they constituted close to 10% of the city’s population during the first half of the 20th century. The article raises the question why and how Jews became insiders in a city of outsiders, with a focus on the economic and political spheres. A related question is why African Americans who moved to Chicago during the 20th century from the American South were systematically excluded.

Abstract: In the postwar decades, Miami Beach became a majority Jewish city partially due to the entrepreneurship first of Jewish hotel owners and then of Jewish builders. As a popular, middle-class vacation resort, it blended elements of big city sophistication with ethnic Jewish tastes. Its southern section housed an exceptional, visible community of elderly, Yiddish-speaking Jews who brought their public culture to its beaches and sidewalks. American Jewish photographers pictured this world as an American shtetl even as Jewish American television producers imagined Miami as a multicultural and multiracial site of vice, eroticism, and cool melodrama.

Abstract: What is the relationship between immigration, health, and the built environment? This article focuses on Bom Retiro, a textile industry-dominated, immigrant-populated zone of about forty thousand people in the center of São Paulo, Brazil, the largest city in the Americas. It analyzes structural racism, memory and self-representation, and Jewish and Arab economic trajectories. Bom Retiro reflects the socioeconomic and racial diversity of São Paulo and is like many other immigrant-populated neighborhoods around the globe. The neighborhood’s residents, and attitudes about them, were critical to the making of São Paulo.

Abstract: This chapter explores the life of Jews in Indonesia before and after its independence. Emerging in the nineteenth century, the local Jewish community thrived in small and remote settlements under the rule of Dutch colonialism and reached its apex in 1941 with the influx of European refugees. Many of the Jews were detained during the Japanese occupation and following the country’s independence, the vast majority of them migrated to other countries. Since the Reformation era (1998 onward), however, Indonesia has witnessed the emergence of new Jewish identification whose leaders and motives the chapter examines.

Abstract: This chapter on Harbin deals with the first city Jews settled in substantial numbers in modern China. Mostly émigrés from Russia, these Jews prospered during the first decades of the twentieth century as Harbin became a main hub for the Trans-Siberian Railway. At its peak, the Jewish community produced as many as twenty newspapers, but with the Japanese occupation of the city in 1932 and even more during the Chinese Civil War, the prosperity ended and the majority of its members left.

Abstract: This chapter examines the Baghdadi network in British Asia and its identity crisis during decolonization with a focus on Southeast Asia and the survival of the Singapore community in particular. The chapter argues that through the colonization process, the transient identity of the Baghdadi Jewish diasporic communities was largely cemented as an anglicized one. However, following decolonization, the class divide within the communities was made all the more obvious as the anglicized elites emigrated to English-speaking countries while leaving the poor behind, as noted in Singapore.

Abstract: Israel has participated in the Eurovision, the largest European music festival, since 1973. The Jewish state regularly invests substantial resources in the contest and goes to great lengths to shine; with four victories, as well as two second places, it has been highly successful. Given its symbolic significance, as well as its actual impact on Israeli cultural diplomacy and nation-branding efforts, the annual media event and the process of selecting an artistic representative frequently elicit values-laden debates. Against this backdrop, the article investigates the evolution of the ways in which Israelis have presented themselves on the Eurovision stage, as well as the country’s internal discourse surrounding this annual cultural ritual. Israel’s participation in the yearly spectacle, I argue, has become an important element of ongoing Zionist-Israeli nation-building.

Abstract: The political context and the comments about Jews found in Latin literature indicate that no discrimination against them is attested to in Rome in the period between the second century BCE and the second century CE. The expulsions from the city applied also to other foreign groups, and the occasional negative comments made by Roman politicians, historians, and poets are not intrinsically different from those regarding other foreign population groups. Although Jewish separatism and cases of alleged attraction to Judaism aroused some hostility, this hostility never led to open conflict of the kind that transpired in other centers of the Mediterranean. However, some disparaging comments about the Jews did not disappear with time, as with other peoples slandered by the Romans, and were later redeployed forming the basis upon which anti-Judaism and antisemitism developed.

Abstract: This chapter explores the role India’s Jews played in the armies of the British Raj and subsequently in the armed forces of independent India. By the late nineteenth century, soldiery was one of Bene Israel’s primary occupations but of no other Jewish group at the time. With World War I, other Jewish groups in India began to enlist, and this tradition became even stronger after India's independence. The chapter also investigates the barriers against this service and the achievements in this field Jews have had nonetheless.

Abstract: This article introduces an unknown autobiography written by Aryeh Leib Feinstein who was a communal official in Brisk (Brześć Litewski). In this detailed memoir, written in 1896 and preserved in manuscript form only, Feinstein describes his life from his childhood in a small village near Brisk up to his adulthood, when he became a wealthy merchant in Brisk and a well-known historian of the local community. This unique egodocument is a subjective interpretation of the profound transformations of Eastern European Jewish culture during the second half of the 19th century. It enables us a better understanding of the complex relationship between the personal and the public spheres during this era and illustrates the need of broadening the setting of the self-fashioning of Jewish individuals.

Abstract: In this article, I focus on two themes connected to the Jewish community of the southern Moroccan town of Oufran and its place within conceptions of Moroccan Jewishness and Jewish Moroccanness. The first theme is the story of Oufran's burned martyrs—ha-nisrafim in Hebrew—and the second, the topos of this community's antiquity. I analyze the intertextual creation, circulation, evolution, and use of the stories of Oufran by Jews, Muslims, and French-Christian colonial agents and discuss how these stories derive from and have sustained Judeo-Muslim imaginings and shared experiences. I also claim that Oufran's story and history are deeply affected by "translations" between different realms of knowledge.

Abstract: This article explores the development of the Jewish community of Łódź, Poland alongside changes in the city as a whole. From a small town at the start of the 19th century, it became a major hub for textile factories, urban labor, and intercultural encounters by the end of the century. Jews experienced and contributed to the changes as workers, factory owners, and chroniclers. The article will examine how aspects related to Łódź’s character and evolution contributed to the wartime and postwar experiences of Jews there, arguing that the city provides a unique and important perspective on modern Jewish history.

Abstract: This article explores the evolution of Manchester Jewry from the beginnings of the world’s first industrial town in the eighteenth century through to today. It shows how Jews have contributed to the idea of Manchester exceptionalism and been part of the city’s heritage and culture although not always regarded as ‘Manchester men’. The concept of cosmopolitanism is utilised to explore whether this was used to include or marginalise the Jews as people of migrant origin. Different waves of Jewish migration are charted and the relations between Jews of different origins and class explored to show both communal solidarity and conflict.

Abstract: A common Jewish Argentine creation story begins in 1889, with 824 Russian Jews disembarking in Buenos Aires and ushering in three decades of massive Jewish migration to that city. In six key themes, this article expands the parameters of that story chronologically, spatially, culturally, and politically. It focuses on the Jewish gaucho (skilled horseman) as an iconic representation of the intersections of Jewish and non-Jewish Buenos Aires; the meanings of neighborhood; the tragedy of ‘white slavery’; cultural institutions; Sephardic porteños (Buenos Aires residents); and the Jewish anarchists and socialists.

Abstract: This article offers a comparison between the events of Alexandria, Egypt, in 38 CE, and the pogroms of nineteenth century Imperial Russia, which demonstrates the emergence of lexical and historical problems when labels are used to define events belonging to different chronological periods and cultural environments. The article argues that the word "pogrom," used to define Russian assaults against the Jews in the Pale of Settlement, has acquired semantic characteristics that cannot be applied to the events of Alexandria almost 2,000 years earlier.

Abstract: The article discusses motivations for immigration to the Land of Israel from Aleppo in the first half of the 18th century. It examines this broader question in light of two specific instances of immigration: that of the Franco Eliyahu Silvera, who settled in Tiberias, and that of two brothers, R. Shimon and R. Raphael Avraham Deweick HaCohen, the sons of R. Shmuel Deweick HaCohen. These latter initially settled in Safed; R. Shimon then moved to Kfar Yasif, while R. Raphael Avraham moved to Tiberias. In each of these cases, the motives for immigration were personal. Silveira’s immigration was prompted by his bankruptcy in 1746, while the Deweick HaCohen brothers were spurred by a serious conflict with the rabbi of the city, R. Shmuel Laniado, and his son R. Shlomo. This conflict stemmed from differences of opinion with regard to halakhic rulings on various matters, especially a dispute on kiddushin. The article reviews the two cases and their context, and explores reasons for immigration to the Land of Israel at that time – especially to Tiberias, which was the subject of messianic expectations.

Abstract: This article concerns the Jewish community living in Bialystok, northeastern Poland's largest city. It used to be an important center of Jewish social and cultural life, with over forty thousand Jewish residents before World War II. As a consequence of the Holocaust, the population of the community decreased to a maximum of 1,500. The research, based mainly on statistical data from Jewish social institutions, reveals further changes, mainly caused by migratory movements and the processes of acculturation and assimilation, which led to the total disappearance of that community within less than thirty years. Another subject of the analysis is the demographic and professional structure of this population in the postwar years. The research shows that the unique demographic structure was the result of varied chances of survival during the war: higher in the case of men and people of working age. The professional activity of Bialystok Jews was characterized by a low rate of regular employment, especially in industry, and a relatively high rate of work in cooperatives and craft workshops. This professional structure differed significantly from the situation before the war and also from that typical in Polish society in general during this period, but with the passage of time, the uniqueness of the Jewish community decreased.

Abstract: The diasporic dimension of Jewish history involves the deterritorialization of the Jewish people. This study considers how the historian may think of the deterritorialization and reterritorialization of medieval Jews in terms of political subjection, spatial anchoring and submission to the halachic norm. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the apparent paradox which makes the Jews a deterritorialized people but whose individuals constitute communities rooted in the territory. Next, it focuses on Jewish law as a deterritorialized and universal tool of sovereignty and therefore as a center of Jewish life. Finally, the case of Narbonne allows us to consider the question of the re-territorialization of medieval Jews in the Diaspora.

Abstract: This article examines how two central scholars based at the Hebrew University's Institute of Contemporary Jewry, Jonathan Frankel, and Ezra Mendelsohn, conceived, created, and codified the academic sub-field of modern Jewish politics. While Mendelsohn and Frankel's research was based upon key concepts developed by these scholars, their focus on the centrality of Jewish agency, the role of the Jewish intelligentsia, and the turn to "the (Jewish) people" helped create a new scholarly framework for imagining, analyzing, and researching modern Jewish politics. Despite their many achievements, they both overlooked several important topics in modern Jewish history including the role of religion, the activities of Jewish women, the experiences of Jews in North Africa and the Middle East, and the impact of Jewish politics on the Palestinians. By examining how these topics are dealt with in more recent works, the penultimate section in this article points to both the continuing influence of Mendelsohn and Frankel's scholarly paradigm as well as some of its inherent limits. In doing so, this analysis of modern Jewish politics makes for an intriguing case study regarding the organization, construction, and production of a particular field of knowledge while simultaneously raising critical questions regarding the very nature, limits, and future of Jewish studies.

Abstract: The article looks at the problem of the involvement of German Jews in World War I and their perception of those times, using as an example one of medium-sized industrial centres of Germany at the time. Stettin, then belonging to Pomerania province of the Kingdom of Prussia, while not a major centre of Jewish life nationwide, still had at that time a well organized Mosaic community and was an important local centre of the thinking and culture of German Jews. In her research the author reached for source materials which have escaped historians’ attention so far but which make it possible to look at the problem from several different angles. A review of a selection of articles printed during the war in the local periodical Jüdisches Gemeindeblatt für die Mitglieder der Synagogengemeinde Stettin sheds light on the position of leasing members of the community on problems related to the ongoing conflict, examined both from the theological as well as political or financial angle. Copies of Stettiner Werner Cohn’s letters from the front show how involvement in the hostilities and related developments impacted the daily reflections of a rank-and-file Jewish soldier. Meanwhile, the documents of the Stettin Jewish community produced post-World War I, dealing with questions of commemorating the dead and the growing threat of anti-Semitism, which are currently stored in Moscow archives, provide access to a reply to the question about the community members’ ex-post perception of their participation and involvement in the conflict and about some long-term consequences of such involvement for them. An analysis of these sources makes it possible to identify the specific ways in which these developments, unquestionably important for the German Jews, impacted this specific community.

Abstract: This essay reinterprets and builds upon Isaak Heinemann's Darkhe Haʾaggadah (The Methods of Aggadah, 1949) as a distinctive framework for thinking about the making of rabbinic pasts. First, it argues against critiques of the work as misled by German romantic notions of history. Second, it presents a different intellectual context in which to situate Heinemann's search for meaning in history: Hegel's Phenomenology and its contemporary reception by Ernst Cassirer. This context illuminates the problem to which Heinemann responded – a binary between subjective and objective history – and the dialectical alternative that he sought in aggadah: »creative historiography.« In conclusion, it outlines how we could expand Heinemann's framework to include Amos Funkenstein's idea of historical consciousness and Hayden White's analytics of historical tropes. This would help us to compare how rabbinic and other ancient representations of the past forge links between interpreted text, author/performer and audience, by analyzing key terms and phrases, rhetorical structures and broader patterns of discourse.

Abstract: Sometimes, in the Commedia dell’arte, Jewish characters who speak Judeo-Italian appear on the stage, revealing a strong intention on the part of non-Jewish authors to mimic the language spoken by contemporary Jews. Therefore, the study of these external sources is very useful to enrich our knowledge of the Judeo-Italian of the early modern period. In this article I will present the scena all’ebraica of the comedy Novantanove Disgrazie di Pulcinella (Rome 1769) by Gregorio Mancinelli. The text, published here in its entirety for the first time, will be preceded by an introduction and accompanied by an English translation and an analysis of the language and contents.
