Abstract:
Presents interim conclusions of an on-going research about the impact of the Holocaust and World War II on the formation of Israeli public consciousness and identity, as reflected in primary sources published in Palestine and in Israel between 1943-53 (e.g. in periodicals, memorial books, memoirs, diaries, literary works, theatrical works, etc.). Relates the differences observed in internalization of the Holocaust to differences between the generations. In the older generation the Holocaust generated pain and identification with Holocaust victims, but also an urge to resume normal life without changes in their perception of life's realities. The Yishuv's young people kept their distance from the Holocaust, which remained external to their world, although it aroused in them feelings of rage, revenge, and revulsion and shame for the Jews who did not react heroically to their ordeal. Public life in the Yishuv revolved around internal political issues. During the postwar years, the Holocaust was present in public discourse and in the generation's consciousness on a rhetorical-ritual level. In time, the memory of World War II faded in the collective memory and consciousness, while Holocaust memory grew stronger.
