Abstract:
Faults Gibson's film for failing to illuminate the Crucifixion story in the light of contemporary (post-Vatican II) mainline Christianity. Highlights the brutality of the film as countering the Gospel accounts. Notes Gibson's use of antisemitic stereotypes, but concludes that some details of the film are inconsistent with a systematic antisemitism. Believes Gibson was indifferent to the antisemitic potential of the film. After discussing mainly Jewish criticism (and defense) of Gibson before and after the film's debut, advocates a need for understanding on both sides: the need for traditional Christians to understand the genuine concern of Jews about the film, and the need for Jews to recognize that the embrace of the film by traditional Christians does not necessarily signify hostility toward or estrangement from Jews.
