Abstract: Since the inception of the Righteous among the Nations program at Yad Vashem in 1963, ca. 16,500 people from European countries have been awarded the title. The real number of rescuers is obviously much greater. Describes the criteria used by Yad Vashem in defining Righteous (not all helpers of Jews were in fact Righteous). Dwells on the types of help afforded by Righteous Gentiles and the dangers faced by them in carrying out their activities. Casts doubt on the altruistic personality conception developed by Samuel and Pearl Oliner; believes that in most of the cases of rescue it was a one-time altruistic deed, not an overall personality trait. Stresses the educational significance of the Righteous Gentile program.
