Abstract:
Describes the massacre of ca. 15,000 Polish Army officers by the Soviet Army in the spring of 1940 in the Katyn Woods (Belarus). Notes the large proportion of Jews among those killed, estimating the number as 462, including the chief rabbi of the Polish armed forces, Baruch Steinberg. The Jewish officers were identified by Jewish names in the list of Katyn victims. Discusses the Jewish tradition of enlisting in the Polish Army, which was intensified during Pilsudski's regime. When the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939, many Jews volunteered to serve in the Polish Army to fight the Nazis in the West and the invading Russians from the East.
