Abstract:
Expounds the viewpoint of Christian Gerlach ["WerkstattGeschichte" 18 (1997)], according to which Hitler indeed gave a verbal order for the murder of all European Jews. Gerlach dates the announcement of this decision to the entry of the USA into the war as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In Hitler's view, it was the Jews who turned the European conflict into a world war, and they had to be punished. Gerlach states that the initial aim of the Wannsee Conference (planned for 9 December 1941) was to solve the question of the fate of German Jews. Gerlach's viewpoint was criticized by Hans Mommsen.
