Abstract:
Juan de Yllan (or João de Illan, or Jean Dillan), born in Portugal, was a member of Amsterdam's Portuguese Jewish community in the mid-17th century. He was a wealthy tradesman, and also owned a home in Dutch Brazil where he lived for a number of years. In 1651 he led a group of 12 Jewish families from Holland (50 persons of Spanish or Portuguese origin) to found an agricultural settlement in Curaçao, which marked the establishment of the first Jewish community there. No more Jews arrived to Curaçao from Holland at the time, due to conflicts between the British and the Dutch, but Jews did arrive there from Brazil, perhaps spurred by Yllan.
