Abstract:
The administration of Kuban (also known as the Krasnodar region, southern Russia), which was governed by Nikolai Kondratenko from 1997-2001, had resorted to anti-Zionist (in fact, antisemitic) rhetoric since the mid-1980s. Dwells on transformations in Kondratenko's antisemitism and anti-Zionism. In the late 1990s-2000s, regional leaders tended to describe all their adversaries as "Zionists" and all that was abhorrent to them as "Zionist". Connects this increase in antisemitism in the Kuban region with the revival of ethnocentrism in Russia since the mid-1980s. Instead of unifying the Russians, it brought about the rise of many ethnic phobias.
