Abstract:
In 1940 there were 270 Jews out of a population of 165,300 in Ghent. The overwhelming majority had arrived in the 1920s-30s from Eastern Europe to study at the university, and found work afterwards in local industries, which were growing rapidly. The anti-Jewish statutes of 1940-42 excluded the Jews from social and cultural life, and were followed by raids and deportations. The Jews went into hiding. Some children were separated from their parents and hidden by members of the local population. However, a third of all the Jews were deported.
