Abstract:
A comparison of the New Catechism of the Catholic Church (1993) with the "Notes on the Correct Way to Present the Jews and Judaism in Preaching and Catechesis" (1985) demonstrates the effort made by the Church to take into account Jewish self-definition. However, the Catechism has not succeeded in integrating these insights into a coherent theology, which explains the occurrence of vestiges of elements of the theology of substitution. There is also a total lack of references to Judaism in history up to the present, including the constantly recurring persecution of the Jews. This lacunae fosters the image of Judaism as no longer relevant after biblical times. After evaluating the contents and form of the Catechism, recommends debating these points in order to enrich the Catholic tradition.
