Abstract:
The Irgun Brit Zion was established in Kovno in 1940, under the Soviet occupation, as a clandestine Zionist youth movement. Its membership was drawn from the camps of the General Zionists and religious Zionists. In June 1941 many members and their families were arrested by the retreating Soviet forces and transported to Siberia. Under German occupation, the movement resumed its activities - mainly educational and cultural - in the Kovno ghetto, reaching a peak of ca. 200 members. It was the largest youth group in the ghetto. The period of spring 1941-spring 1943 was relatively "quiet" and allowed diverse cultural pursuits: study classes, art exhibitions, theatrical performances, etc. IBZ printed and distributed its newsletter "Nitzotz" throughout the war period. In 1943, when conditions worsened, the members also engaged in defense, mainly preparing bunkers to hide in. Most of the members who hid in bunkers were discovered by the Germans in 1944 - some were murdered, and others were transported to the German camp at Kaufering, where they continued their activities until the liberation.
