Abstract:
Examines the treatise "Tratado sobre os varios meyos que se offerecerao a sua Magestade Cathólica para remedio do Judaismo neste Reyno de Portugal", attributed to Fernão Martins Mascarenhas, Inquisitor and bishop of Algarves, found at the University of Coimbra. Following the forced conversion in 1497, a heated debate arose as to the place of the Conversos in Portuguese society - some wished to see them totally assimilated, while others wished them to be kept separate or even expelled. The treatise, clearly anti-Converso, presents various points of view, sometimes contradictory, reflecting the spirit of the first decade of the 17th century. Subjects discussed are the general pardon for their sins granted to the Conversos by the Pope in 1605, the question of allowing Conversos to leave Portugal (emigrants always returned to Judaism), punishment for Conversos engaged in Judaizing, and stronger control by the Inquisition. It is clear from the treatise that the Conversos tried, by all means at their disposal, to continue to observe Judaism. Pp. 395-400 contain excerpts from the treatise.
