Abstract:
An examination of Dutch popular literature of the 18th century reveals various negative stereotypes, mainly of Ashkenazi Jews, a phenomenon apparently influenced by social and economic circumstances. The Jew was depicted as unreliable, dishonest, avaricious, cowardly, noisy, and stubborn. In looks he was depicted as bearded and dirty. As for culture, writers focused on the Jews' strange speech and the awkwardness of their religion. Apart from these prejudices in popular literature, Jews were scorned and sometimes beaten. In Dutch official literature the Jews were hardly mentioned. This may be explained by economic interests. Includes illustrations.
