Abstract:
The purpose of the Catholic Bureau for Israel was to combat antisemitism in Belgium and to create a forum for dialogue between Catholics and Jews. In 1938, Cardinal van Roey closed the office, claiming that he acted in the name of peace, in order to prevent the Bureau's activities from pouring oil on the flames of antisemitism. States that perhaps his decision was influenced by the opinions of the more traditional clergy, who were opposed to the Bureau.
