Abstract: 12 chapters about the life of Willi Werner Hecht, starting with his youth, life as a student, his life in Europe and finally how he went to Israel to live with his family.
Abstract: The memoir tells about Hecht's changing relationship to his Jewish religion. It gives account of the several animals the family possessed, of the social life and character of his parents, how they bought a car and details about his time at the “Gymnasium”, the “Realschule” and finally at the “Realgymnasium”. Furthermore Hecht joined the “Boy Scouts”, but his parents forbade this membership. Hecht writes about the holidays in the Swiss Alps, his problematic relationship to his brother Rudi, his cousin Ernst Levy, a journey to Paris and his first love. The author also tells about his discovery of Zionism and how he attended discussions about this topic between people like Chaim Weizmann and Wladimir Jabotinsky. Moreover he writes about his time at the university and how he experienced the Jewish Refugees shortly before the war. He also describes how he found his future wife Carola Philippson, his time at the Swiss Army. The memoir narrates Hechts life during World War II, e.g. his flight from Antwerp, his time in Portugal, the birth of his first child. Hechts wife was involved in the WIZO, leading the branch for the young members (“Jungwizo”).
Abstract: Furthermore the memoir describes the work of Hecht as a lawyer after the war, including a trip to Moscow, and his family life, now with two sons as well as the growing interest in Israel and finally the emigration to Jerusalem/Israel. The memoir includes paragraphs about the inflation in Germany during the early 20s, the situation in Switzerland between 1933-1945 in general, Hecht's observations in the Soviet Union after the War and several personal thoughts about the role of the lawyer.
