Abstract:
In the prophetic narratives of 1 and 2 Kings, both Elijah and Elisha are said to have performed an action designated by the verbal root גה"ר, the former to call a storm (1 Kgs 18:42) and the latter to revive a child (2 Kgs 4:34-35). Building on recent work that has established this root to denote sound production, the present article introduces a Mandaic cognate verb that establishes the root to have had the more precise semantics "thunder". The multiple potential implications of this sense are then explored in literary and historical context.
