Abstract:
Discusses a 2004 Danish poll regarding, inter alia, attitudes towards Jews among five non-Western immigrant groups: Turks, Pakistanis, Somalians, Palestinians, and former Yugoslavs. The results show that each of the five groups is significantly more mistrustful of Jews than ethnic Danes. Only 18% of the Danes distrusted Jews, while 65% of the non-Western respondents did so. Over 70% of the immigrants did not want their children to marry Jews, while the percentage among the Danes was only 15. In all of the immigrant groups, Muslims were more hostile to Jews than were Christians. The poll also showed that attitudes toward Jews were not affected by gender, age, or degree of social marginalization, but rather by general xenophobia and degree of religiosity. Only among immigrants of Palestinian origin did the Israeli-Palestinian conflict affect attitudes toward Jews. Contends that the results contradict the common assumption that the Middle East conflict is one of the most important factors behind anti-Jewish sentiment.
