Abstract:
Reflects on the conflicting Polish and Jewish perspectives on the Holocaust, Auschwitz, and Polish-Jewish relations in the 20th century. This conflict is not a war over history, but over memory. It is possible in some cases to bridge the gap between these perspectives, e.g. in 1998 the organizers of the March of the Living agreed to allow a group of non-Jewish youth to take part in the march. A compromise on the issue of the crosses at the site of Auschwitz can also be found. Nevertheless, this war of memory will be intensified. It will be not so much a conflict between the Poles and the Jews worldwide rather than a debate between Polish Jews and non-Jews, who share a common history.
