Abstract:
From the beginning of the 19th century and on, Spanish society became involved in a confrontation between absolutists - Catholic integrationists - and liberals, a confrontation which would end in civil war. During this period (in which there were almost no Jews in Spain), antisemitism was used as a propaganda weapon by the absolutists against the liberals. The liberals were accused of being part of the Jewish-Masonic world conspiracy, aimed at destroying Christian Western civilization and Spanish society. Anti-Jewish propaganda was especially virulent during the Second Republic (1931-1936), when the Spanish liberal movement came to power, and during the first years of the Franco regime (after 1939). Later, under pressure of new international circumstances, the Franco regime abandoned antisemitic propaganda. It was used exclusively by neo-Nazi groups, which did not have much influence on Spanish society.
