Abstract:
Following the liberation of Denmark in May 1945, the refugees who fled to Sweden in 1943 returned. About 200-300 Jewish refugees found themselves without a home or job to return to. Some of them were housed in the Øregaard Gymnasium, in a northern suburb of Copenhagen, during May-June 1945. In September, parents of students at the Gymnasium insisted that the Jews be moved, rather than the students. In October, the Jews were moved to a building that only 2-3 months before had been declared "unfit for human habitation". States that there are undeniable antisemitic tones in the various statements of the local authorities and in the press.
