Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference "The Church, Jews and Judaism", Warsaw, June 1989. Stresses that Augustine's teaching was the basis for longstanding anti-Jewish prejudice in the Christian world, and that only after the Holocaust did Church authorities understand the impossibility of continuing with this prejudice. Surveys various Vatican documents and papal homilies (especially by Pope John Paul II) postulating changes and underlining the importance of the Jewish tradition for understanding Christianity. Mentions that false interpretations of some parts of the New Testament had a role in spreading antisemitism. Presently, the Church authorities wish to remove from its teaching everything that does not serve the spirit of dialogue and reconciliation. Stresses the importance of the new approach and of Christian-Jewish dialogue in Poland.
