Abstract:
The massive immigration of Poles and Jews from Polish territories at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th caused a "transfer" of the mutual antagonism between Poles and Jews to the United States. Concentrates on discussions in the American Polish and Jewish press concerning the creation of an independent Polish state. Part of the Jewish press accused Polish society of being totally antisemitic, and negated the idea of an independent Poland. The Polish nationalistic press accused Jews of lack of loyalty to the Polish cause and of damaging its interests. Some Poles and Jews looked for Polish-Jewish understanding in the USA, which was very difficult, partly because of antisemitic arguments in the Polish press. The antagonism increased at the end of the First World War.
