Abstract:
Discusses the Jew as "other" in German fiction and memoirs. Focuses on Gregor von Rezzori's "Memoiren eines Antisemiten" (1979), Ingeborg Day's "Ghost Waltz" (1980), Bernhard Schlink's "Der Vorleser" (1995), and W.G. Sebald's "Die Ausgewanderten" (1993). Notes that Rezzori accepts responsibility for and criticizes his own and his family's antisemitism, while Day defends the Germans and feels that Jews deserve to be hated for their difference. Schlink depicts Jews as cold people, who brought about a tragedy in Germany, and Sebald depicts them as outsiders and as survivors who did not really survive.
