Abstract:
The Ukrainian poet and writer Ivan Franko (1856-1916) was often accused of being an antisemite. However, his views were in fact ambivalent - although his political statements and actions were at times filled with nationalist emotion and resentment, he never clearly articulated any anti-Jewish program, and he consistently struggled against xenophobia. Nevertheless, Franko, following Drahomanov, a Ukrainian political thinker, advocated limited integration of Jews, i.e. the granting of civil rights to those Jews who expressed solidarity with Ukrainian "popular ideals"; for the rest of the Jews, Franko supported a gradual and planned emigration. He thought that Ukrainians should support Jewish efforts to create their own independent state, and in return he expected the Jews not to impede the struggle for Ukrainian national liberation.
