Abstract:
Discusses the influence of German culture on Jewish identity during the 19th century and up to World War II in Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland. Describes the desire of Jewish intellectuals to achieve full social integration and assimilation, and the antisemitic perceptions which prevented the achievement of these goals. Despite their intense assimilation to German language and culture, the Jews were viewed as an alien element in the dominant culture.
