Abstract:
Argues that documents do not support the thesis that the Nazis planned the mass extermination of Jews in gas chambers as early as spring or summer 1941. Until June 1942, the Final Solution, as Heydrich presented it at the Wannsee Conference, was to be achieved by the deportation of the Jews to the northern territories of the USSR, where most of them would perish under the harsh conditions; the Nazis would kill the survivors. Death by gassing of Jews unfit for work was practiced only locally; the large extermination camps were not set up until it became clear that the plans for deportation to the USSR were unrealistic.
