Abstract:
Describes the situation of the Jews in Germany between 1933-38, the direct pretext for the pogrom (the murder of Ernst vom Rath), and the course of events on 9-10 November 1938. States that it was the first pogrom in history which was initiated by the authorities and centrally directed. Discusses the role of the NSDAP and the personal contributions of Goebbels, Himmler, and Heydrich. Deals with the role of the Gestapo, the SS, and the SA, and underlines the use of modern techniques (telephone, radio, etc.) in its organization. Discusses, as well, the term "Kristallnacht" and reasons for the refusal to use it by many historians. German documents concerning the pogrom are appended on pp. 214-217.
