Abstract:
Giulio Cesare Russo (1559-1619), known as Friar Lorenzo de Brindisi, was a preacher of sermons in the Counter-Reformation period, sermons which the Jews were required to attend. Brindisi preached in Italy, Germany, and Prague. The core of his discourse was based on what he considered to be the materialism of the Jews (or their carnality) and the spiritualism of Catholicism. He contended that the materialism of the Jews would not have allowed them to interpret the Holy Scriptures correctly, resulting in their incredulity regarding the identification of Jesus as the Messiah.
