Abstract: Discusses the psychological significance of tendencies toward forgetfulness or remembrance of the Holocaust. General factors which favor forgetting include the enormity of the event, the lapse of time, and the natural tendency to want to "forgive and forget." Recent public polemics (the Waldheim case, Bitburg) have revealed other factors, also noticeable in the Italian press: the privatization of the Holocaust (presented as a purely Jewish problem), the transformation of the victims into present-day (Israeli) "executioners, " and relativization of the event's uniqueness. There is a tendency toward a return to "normality" and indifference, to turn the Holocaust into a symbol, and to attribute an excess of meanings to the Holocaust (e.g. presentation of Nazi Germany as a "victim" of the Jews, or demonization of Nazism).
