Abstract:
Refutes the widespread belief in the religious tolerance and fruitful coexistence of Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Muslim Spain. Jews and Christians, although tolerated as "people of the book", were still considered non-believers, for whom the Qur'an prescribed a lower status and numerous restrictions. The more tolerant regime of the Omayyads (929-1031) was short-lived and was succeeded by fundamentalist Muslim fanatics, whose intolerance was heightened by the wars against the equally intolerant Christians of the Reconquista period.
