Abstract:
Discusses the heritage of French historian Léon Poliakov (1910-1997). Poliakov published his first work in response to the Holocaust. His oeuvre deals with the history of antisemitism, the causes of the Holocaust, the relationship between religious anti-Judaism and modern antisemitism, the causes of antisemitism, conspiracy theories, and anti-Zionism. Emphasizes that Poliakov preferred the word Judeophobia to antisemitism. Initially, he viewed Judeophobia as stemming from resistance to the Jewish Bible, which clearly distinguishes man from animals and nature, and combats idols made of wood or stone. At the end of his life, he hypothesized that Judeophobia was a reaction to the totality of Jewish laws, which safeguard human life, especially that of children. In 1981 Poliakov assessed that attacks against the Jews would become more indirect and that various causes, like the Palestinian cause, would be instrumentalized. Until the end of his life, he remained pessimistic regarding the disappearance of Judeophobia.
