Abstract: "Salo Baron was born in 1895 under the Habsburg empire and became one of the greatest historians of Judaism. He testified at the Eichmann trial. Baron was invited to teach in New York in 1926. When he got here he discovered what he thought was the American exception: as a new society, the United States would have not experienced any persecutions of Jews. That would alone refute--in his own words--"a lachrymose version of history," the story that lays out the destiny of Judaism as an uninterrupted list of persecutions and massacres. At most, he thought, American Jews would meet with prejudice or social barriers, but never antisemitism theorized as a political ideology. And yet, in 1913, in Atlanta, there was the case of Leo Frank: the lynching of a Jew accused of the ritual murder of a young woman, even though the charges had been dropped. It was the first American instance of hate-driven antisemitism. Some years later, Roosevelt's New Deal radically transformed the destiny of American Jews. For the first time powerful figures such as Henry Morgenthau and Louis Brandeis came to the fore, and Jews experienced a newfound prominence. Antisemites in America declared that Jews, having taken over the government, would destroy America's identity. During the period from Roosevelt to Obama, antisemitism increased and was clearly seen recently in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville in 2017 and in the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh in 2018. Antisemitic violence continues to grow here. On January 6, 2021, the attempted coup against the Capitol saw an outpouring of violently antisemitic slogans. All of which begs the question: does this mean that the romantic view of American exceptionalism, sanctified by many historians of American Judaism, has been refuted once and for all? Is the idea of this place of exile, seen as a protective and exceptional "home," in fact an illusion? Should it also be considered as the return of a "lachrymose" history? This book seeks to explore the answers to these questions"
Abstract: Pierre Birnbaum offers a timely reconsideration of the tear-stained pages of Jewish history and the persistence of antisemitism

Abstract: "From Frank Sinatra's early pro-Zionist rallying to Steven Spielberg's present-day peacemaking, Hollywood has long enjoyed a "special relationship" with Israel. This book offers a groundbreaking account of this relationship, both on and off the screen. Tony Shaw and Giora Goodman investigate the many ways in which Hollywood's moguls, directors, and actors have supported or challenged Israel for more than seven decades. They explore the complex story of Israel's relationship with American Jewry and illuminate how media and soft power have shaped the Arab-Israeli conflict. Shaw and Goodman draw on a vast range of archival sources to demonstrate how show business has played a pivotal role in crafting the U.S.-Israel alliance. They probe the influence of Israeli diplomacy on Hollywood's output and lobbying activities, but also highlight the limits of ideological devotion in high-risk entertainment industries. The book details the political involvement with Israel-and Palestine-of household names such as Eddie Cantor, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Redgrave, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert De Niro, and Natalie Portman. It also spotlights the role of key behind-the-scenes players like Dore Schary, Arthur Krim, Arnon Milchan, and Haim Saban. Bringing the story up to the moment, Shaw and Goodman contend that the Hollywood-Israel relationship might now be at a turning point. Shedding new light on the political power that images and celebrity can wield, Hollywood and Israel shows the world's entertainment capital to be an important player in international affairs"--

Abstract: Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century in spite of his well-known transgressions-his complicity with National Socialism and his inability to show remorse or compassion for its victims. In The Duplicity of Philosophy’s Shadow, Elliot R. Wolfson intervenes in a debate that has seen much attention in scholarly and popular media from a unique perspective, as a scholar of Jewish mysticism and philosophy who has been profoundly influenced by Heidegger’s work. Wolfson sets out to probe Heidegger’s writings to expose what remains unthought. In spite of Heidegger’s explicit anti-Semitic statements, Wolfson reveals some crucial aspects of his thinking―including criticism of the biological racism and militant apocalypticism of Nazism―that betray an affinity with dimensions of Jewish thought: the triangulation of the concepts of homeland, language, and peoplehood; Jewish messianism and the notion of historical time as the return of the same that is always different; inclusion, exclusion, and the status of the other; the problem of evil in kabbalistic symbolism. Using Heidegger’s own methods, Wolfson reflects on the inextricable link of truth and untruth and investigates the matter of silence and the limits of speech. He challenges the tendency to bifurcate the relationship of the political and the philosophical in Heidegger’s thought, but parts company with those who write off Heidegger as a Nazi ideologue. Ultimately, The Duplicity of Philosophy’s Shadow argues, the greatness and relevance of Heidegger’s work is that he presents us with the opportunity to think the unthinkable as part of our communal destiny as historical beings. --

Abstract: With what may seem surprising frequency, Caribbean writers have turned to Jewish Caribbean experiences of exodus and reinvention, from the arrival of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal in the 1490s to the flight of European Jewish refugees to Trinidad and elsewhere in the 1930s. Examining this historical migration through the lens of postwar Caribbean fiction and poetry, Sarah Phillips Casteel conducts the first major study of representations of Jewishness in Caribbean literature. Bridging the gap between postcolonial and Jewish studies, Calypso Jews enriches crosscultural investigations of Caribbean creolization. Caribbean writers invoke both the 1492 expulsion and the Holocaust as part of their literary archaeology of slavery and its legacies. Despite the unequal and sometimes fraught relations between Blacks and Jews in the Caribbean before and after emancipation, Black-Jewish literary encounters reflect sympathy and identification more than antagonism and competition. Proposing an alternative to U.S.-based critical narratives of Black-Jewish relations, Casteel reads Derek Walcott, Maryse Condé, Michelle Cliff, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, David Dabydeen, and Paul Gilroy, among others, to reveal a distinctive inter-diasporic relationship refracted through the creative innovations of two resilient cultures.

Abstract: This volume, by a distinguished group of historians and political scientists, makes an original contribution to the history of democracy in modern Europe. It examines the history of liberalism, anti-Semitism, and democracy. The strengths and weaknesses of political liberalism, its complex historical relationship with anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria, and the development of democratic political cultures in Europe since the Second World War are explored. The book also discusses the concept of citizenship and human rights and the transfer of constitutional arrangements and party programmes across different regimes. The volume addresses both specific historical problems and comparative issues and ranges, for example, from the cultural history of Jewish violinists to the significance of the 1998 Red-Green coalition in Germany.

Abstract: The twentieth century has seen both the greatest triumph of Jewish history and its greatest tragedy: the birth of the nation of Israel, and the state-sponsored genocide of the Holocaust. A People Apart is the first study to examine the role played by the Jews themselves, across the whole of Europe, during the century and a half leading up to these events. David Vital explores the Jews' troubled relationship with Europe, documenting the struggles of this 'nation without a territory' to establish a place for itself within an increasingly polarized and nationalist continent. He examines the clash within the Jewish community between politically neutral traditionalists and a new group of activists, whose unprecedented demands for national and political self-determination were stimulated both by increasing civil emancipation and the mounting effort to drive the Jews out of Europe altogether. Controversially, Professor Vital concludes that the history of the Jewish people was indeed in crucial respects although certainly not all of their own making; at times by their own autonomous action and choice; at others by inaction and default.
