Abstract:
At the turn of the 20th century, Odessa was one of the most important cities of the Russian Empire. Despite 19th-century pogroms, the life of local Jewish communities flourished in economic, religious and cultural terms. As related by the historian Apollon Skalkowski and the writer Isaac Babel, Jewish educational institutions had a very good reputation. Drawing on archival material, the author of the article provides a detailed description of different schools, where Jews of Odessa were educated.
