Abstract:
Traces the life of the Converso Portuguese dramatist (1705-39) on the occasion of the first publication in Spain, in 2006, of two of his works. Da Silva's family belonged to a circle of conspicuous Conversos, including church functionaries, judges, doctors, wealthy property owners and business people. His father and he himself were lawyers. From 1712 he and his family, who were accused of Judaizing by the Inquisition, suffered imprisonment and torture several times. In 1739, da Silva was condemned to death, executed, and then burned.
