Abstract:
Discusses some antisemitic art works (paintings, sculptures) created in Poland from the Middle Ages through the 19th century, pointing to the heroic 19th century depictions of Berek Joselewicz (1764-1809) ) as an exception. Joselewicz commanded the first Jewish military formation in modern history, a cavalry unit of Jewish recruits which he formed in 1794 and which participated in the Kościuszko Uprising in Poland. After the defeat of the Kościuszko Uprising, Joselewicz left for Galicia and then for Italy, where he joined the Polish Legions under Henryk Dąbrowski. As a commander of a sabre company in Polish cavalry units, he fought in various battles of the Napoleonic period. He was killed in the Battle of Kock in 1809 during an encounter with a unit of Austrian hussars. Presents illustrations of Joselewicz by Polish artists; he is revered by Poles as a national hero.
